RS/EQ: The Sabbath – A Delight

As we head into the 2008 course of study for Relief Society and Priesthood, I’m excited to think about studying the words of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Before we begin, however, I’d like to finish up our series on the lessons provided by Spencer W. Kimball. Lesson #16 in the book is entitled, “The Sabbath—A Delight.” How often do we think of the Sabbath as being a delight? I generally think of it with a mixture of fear and trembling, but I need to change that perception. President Kimball begins his lesson by sharing a story from a time when … Continue reading

Remember the Sabbath

The Sabbath is a day that we take time to worship Christ. It is important to prepare ourselves for this wonderful day of rest and worship. Many people mistakenly leave church at church and only focus on the gospel on Sunday, but in order to truly be ready for the Sabbath, we need to focus on the gospel throughout the week. As we pray each day it is important to take time to reflect on the things we need to repent of or to focus more on. This focus helps us when it comes time to take the Sacrament and … Continue reading

The Sabbath Day

We have been commanded to set aside the Sabbath day as a day of rest. It is a day to worship the Lord and remember all the things that He has given to us. It is a day to take the time to be together with your family. It is a day to contemplate and consider the many aspects of the gospel. Are there some Sundays when you start the day more tired than you began it? Do you struggle with the ways to help your children keep the Sabbath Day holy? Do you feel like you spend the entire … Continue reading

The Sabbath in Bible Times

Why Was there a Sabbath? The Sabbath, or “day of rest”, established by God at Creation is still observed by Orthodox Jews today. God’s purpose for the Sabbath was not simply that His people “take a day off” to remember His act of Creation, but also that they would be set apart from all other nations by their observance of it. The pagan nations, which eventually surrounded Israel, didn’t observe the Sabbath. Therefore, if the Jews continued to keep it, it would help protect them from assimilating into pagan cultures, and also make Israel stand out to its neighbors. Josephus, … Continue reading

Seeking and Following the Spirit-Part II

If you missed part I in this series, go here first. If we truly want to seek the spirit, first, we have to want the Holy Ghost in our lives. I’m sure all of us can think of a time in our lives where we were more spiritually minded. Maybe some of you are experiencing that time right now. But, maybe some of you can think of more spiritual times in your life than right now. One thing we need to do is to WANT the Holy Ghost in our lives daily. This is the first step in seeking it. … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments: The Fourth Commandment

In the Book of Exodus, chapter twenty and verses eight through eleven, we read: 8. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10. But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the … Continue reading

Tristi’s Quest . . . It Begins

I have a confession to make. It’s one of those things that good little Mormons try to keep a secret, knowing that it’s wrong, and yet, not knowing how to get over the mindset. I really have a hard time keeping the Sabbath day holy. I know it’s important. I know and believe that it shows our Heavenly Father our love for Him. I’ve read the scriptures that outline the blessings we will receive when we accomplish it. There’s just one problem . . . I get bored. Really, really bored. It’s so hard not to check my e-mails and … Continue reading

When Church Is Cancelled

There may be times when church is cancelled in your area. Most often this happens as a result of inclement weather. It is important to still honor the Sabbath day and take time to remember Christ. You can create some special memories by making sure to do this in your home. Here are five ideas that you can do when church is cancelled. 1) You may consider having a family testimony meeting. We’ve had a great week here in LDS. If you weren’t able to join us every day, here is a recap. In “Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 46,” Miriam outlines everyone’s lessons and helps us stay on track. She also gives us a wonderful report on Elder Ballard’s talk “Faith, Family, Facts and Fruit” about the perceptions people have about the Church. Tristi continues to catch us up on the year’s course of study in Spencer W. Kimball’s lesson “We Should Be a Reverent People.” Do you have a favorite story from Church history? Tristi reviews “Latter-day Saint Heroes and Heroines,” … Continue reading
