My Favorite Conference Talk

It seems like whenever I listen to conference twice a year, and think about what I want to share on this blog, that I am always drawn to choose talks that are my “favorite” based on what I must need to learn or hear at the time. It is a blessing to me to have this avenue to re-read the conference talks and share my thoughts on them with whoever is reading. Maybe your favorite was not my favorite. It doesn’t really matter, because they are all inspired. But, I want to share a talk with you that was important … Continue reading

Primary Time: June 2008 Sharing Time Theme

This month the theme for sharing time is “The temple is a blessing for me and my family.” The song is “I Love to See the Temple.” The scripture is “And verily I say unto you, let this house be built unto my name, that I may reveal mine ordinances therein unto my people” (Doctrine and Covenants 124:40). The theme is divided into four principles the first principle focuses on living worthily to be able to attend the temple. The second principle teaches the children that tithing is used to help build the temples. The third principle teaches about the … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – March 17th – 22nd

I hope you all had a great week – we sure did here in LDS. Here’s a quick recap of the blogs we brought you. We began our week with another installment in the Senior Missionary Series, this on “Talking with Your Bishop.” After you’ve made the decision to serve, you’ll meet with your bishop to discuss your plans with him and to be interviewed for worthiness to serve that mission. We then read about the Joseph Smith lesson in our 2008 manual on “Repentance.” “Incorporating Gospel Teaching into Daily Life” sympathizes with all us busy parents who struggle to … Continue reading

Helping Children Learn to Make Charitable Choices

Many of us have taught our children about tithing and making charitable donations to organizations and causes of OUR choosing–but as children get older, we also need to help them learn how to evaluate and make their own choices about charities. As kids take ownership in causes of their own choosing, they can more fully experience the joys and responsibilities that come with charitable giving. They may need some guidance and encouragement, however, in figuring out who and what to give to. My kids have been raised with volunteering and assisting me in making charitable donations–but I realized a couple … Continue reading

In Witness of the Resurrected Lord, we discussed various people who saw the Lord following His resurrection. In Doubting Thomas, we considered the disciples who doubted news of Christ’s resurrection. In The Value of the Old Testament, we discuss the relevance of the first book of the bible. In Did Not Our Hearts Burn?, we discussed the … Continue reading

An Example to Your Children

Most of us know or have been told that, as parents, our best teaching tool is our example. I, personally, grew up in a household where the mantra was ‘do as I say, not as I do’. My mom usually said this in a joking tone of voice, but she did sincerely mean it. I, myself, have caught myself in typical parenting blunders – my favorite was when I lightly swatted one of my toddlers’ bottoms while saying “We don’t hit!” That one caused an entire shift in parenting technique. A close second occurs on long car trips, when I … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Law of Tithing”

In his talk “The Law of Tithing” Elder Daniel L Johnson speaks about the law of tithing. He goes over the basics of the law of tithing and explains each of the aspect of the law of tithing. He speaks specifically to those who may struggle with paying their tithing. He acknowledges that at times it may be difficult to pay our tithing because of other obligations, but that we are blessed when we do so. Elder Johnson explains that tithing is ten percent of all your increase and gain. It is important to realize that it is a set … Continue reading

Tithing Settlement

It is time for tithing settlement once again. This is a great opportunity that each member has to sit down with the bishop each year and discuss the blessings of paying tithing. At tithing settlement you will declare whether or not you have paid a full or partial tithing. During tithing settlement the bishop will discuss how your family is doing. He often will extend some sort of spiritual challenge to your family, such as reading the scriptures daily. Although the days are long for the bishop, the meetings are a time when he gets to meet with ward members … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions Week 44

The dinner discussion topics are pulled from lesson forty-four in the manuals. You may need to adjust according to your ward’s schedule. Remember to keep the discussions positive and as fun as possible. This is a time reinforce the principles they have learned, and you should do it in positive way. If you have a child in nursery or Sunbeams she learned about how she can help at church. The children learned about Nephi building the boat and how he needed his family’s help to complete the task. The children learned about the different people who help at church (the … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Tithes and Offerings

The next topic in the “For the Strength of Youth” manual is “Tithes and Offerings.” This is a great topic to spend a family home evening discussing. This principle is a good one to review from time to time because it is important to remember why we pay our tithing. The section also covers the law of the fast. You can open the lesson by reading Malachi 3:10. You may want to discuss what it means by the types of blessings you receive. These blessings are not necessarily monetary, but are definitely spiritual blessings. As a family read the “Tithes … Continue reading
