Primary Music

In my primary right now we are going through a bit of a transitional period as we have a new primary chorister, and are trying to work out the kinks. So, I’ve been reading a lot in the church handbook about the purpose of singing time, and the purpose of the primary songs. Something stood out to me as I was reading today that got me thinking. I loved singing in primary as a child. I still do, actually. Some of those songs I sang as a child are still with me despite my horrible memory. Even to this day, … Continue reading

Primary Power

My sweet daughter participated in her first primary program this past week. Lovely. I was so excited. She is such a sweet little girl, and being a Sunbeam is a special time. They are just so excited about everything, and not jaded. You know, like the older 10-year-old girls who are just itching to get to Young Women. But, that is a long way away, so luckily, I can just focus on the present and enjoying her excitement for participating in her first program. But, I was shocked when she was given her part. It was 3 lines!!! Doesn’t that … Continue reading

Teaching Your Sunbeam to Attend Class

I’m a bit worn out from my experiences at church yesterday. I have a three-year-old whose idea of going to church includes running around, climbing on tables, and very loudly protesting the idea of being there. He’s just being three, but three-year-olds are old enough to learn proper church behavior. As the parent, you best know your child and can determine what are the proper ways to teach him. During sacrament meeting, we keep him entertained with coloring books and magnets that he can stick on the chairs in front of us. Usually about three-quarters of the way through the … Continue reading

Primary Time: Incorporating Gospel Teaching Into Daily Life

When you have children in primary, you are dealing with many issues along with teaching them the gospel. It can be easy to push aside the most important things to fit in the busy to do lists that come with parenting. It is important to find ways to incorporate gospel teaching into the every day experiences that you are having. Here are five easy ways to do this. 1) When you are talking about a situation that your child may be experiencing at school, or with their friends try to relate it back to the gospel. You can talk about … Continue reading

The Importance of Songs, Poems, and Rhymes in the Classroom

If any of you have searched the websites of teachers or teaching websites (especially those of preschool, kindergarten, or primary grades) you have probably noticed that most of these sites feature renditions of popular chants, rhymes, and songs. These writings add new words to old favorites to fit a particular theme or time of year. For example you may see “The Ten Little Indians” changed to “The Ten Little Turkeys”. For each unit or thematic focus, I try to have at least two or three of these remakes. The key is to have a tune that children already know and … Continue reading

Primary Time: September 2007 Sharing Time Theme

The sharing time theme for September is “My faith in Jesus Christ grows when I serve others.” The scripture is Mosiah 2:17: “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” Since the Sacrament Program is coming up there is not a specific song that the children will learn this month. You should take the time to review all of the songs with your children. The theme is broken down into four separate points. The children will learn that Jesus taught that we should serve others. They will learn that … Continue reading

Serving in the Primary: Primary Pianist

One calling that is quite important is that of Primary pianist. Although this calling may seem peripheral to the Primary organization, it really is an important calling. I have served in a Primary presidency when we had an extremely difficult time finding someone to be the pianist. If you are serving as the pianist then you should realize that your calling is essential in helping the Primary children learn the songs. It is important to practice and prepare to play the songs that the children will be singing each week. If you feel that you do not play well enough … Continue reading

Serving in the Primary: Primary Chorister

It is amazing how important it is to have a good Primary chorister. Many may brush aside this calling, as something that is secondary or others may think that the chorister only teaches songs. The Primary chorister really brings the music to life for the children. The chorister will help the children learn songs that teach gospel principles. These songs may come to mind when the children are struggling with something in their lives. Here are four tips on being a successful Primary chorister. 1) Be there each week. This makes a huge difference to the children. If they know … Continue reading

Primary Time: July Theme “My Family Can Follow Jesus Christ in Faith”

The Sharing Time theme for July is “My family can follow Jesus Christ in faith.” The scripture is taken from the family proclamation: “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ.” The theme focuses on learning about righteous families from the scriptures. It also points out that you can learn from the example of the first member of your family to join the church. The theme also focuses on the importance of honoring your parents. Finally the theme emphasizes the importance of family home evening, scripture study and … Continue reading

Primary Time: Preparing Sharing Time

When you teach in Primary you will be asked at some point to have your class be in charge of a sharing time. It is important to prepare the theme on the topic that your presidency asks you to. You may want to ask them what specific area they want you to cover so that you do not duplicate an earlier sharing time. Here are five tips to help you have a fun sharing time. 1) Be sure to involve your students. They should ultimately be the ones standing in front of the rest of the Primary. Depending on their … Continue reading
