Primary Time: Primary Theme for 2007

The Primary has announced its sharing time theme for 2007. It is "I'll Follow Him in Faith." The theme is the overarching theme for the entire year. Each month will address a separate part of the theme. This year the theme focuses on the Savior, and so the children will learn about the Savior and the gospel each month during sharing time.

The Primary presidency will use this outline to plan for each sharing time. They will also use the theme to plan the Sacrament program for each year. Each month they children will learn a new song that is related to the monthly theme. There is also a scripture that is used for each month's theme. You can learn more about the theme each month in "The Friend" in the sharing time section.

As parents it is easy to reinforce the sharing time themes at home. You can plan family home evening lessons around them. If you have older children you may encourage them to memorize that month's scripture. You can also practice each month's song as a family. This will help your children learn and grasp the important concepts that are being taught.

If you are a leader you have several great resources available to you as you plan sharing time each week. The outline includes four separate ideas that you should touch on each month. "The Friend" also includes ideas that you can use during sharing time. For different ideas on how to implement the teachings you can also use the "Teaching, No Greater Call" manual put out by the church. This is a great resource, and you should read the section devoted to teaching children.

The theme for the year will help the children come to know the Savior better. It teaches of His life and ministry and the principles that we all should know and follow. I hope that you will take the time to discuss the theme with your children throughout the coming year.

I am excited about this theme. We are planning for next year and wondering what unique ideas you have about birthday gifts for the primary children that follow this theme. I think we are getting glow in the dark silicone wristbands that have the theme engraved on them. Let me know your ideas.

I also wanted to ask if you have a favorite forum site to discuss/share LDS primary ideas.

You can also access the Friend online, if you don't subscribe.

I think that the bracelet sounds like a good gift. I would also think about purchasing a small picture of Christ to give as well. I know you can purchase 3x4 cards inexpensively. You may want to scroll around. Since I haven't served in the Primary for about four years, I really do not know any site that is directly related to Primary, but the LDS Forum here http://forums.families.com/christian-lds-families,f19 can give you some good ideas. If you have any specific questions, or topics you would like me to write about, feel free to PM me. Thanks.

I found some themed wristbands at http://www.saltlakecounty.com/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=59?ref=1 I am hoping to find 10 other people who want to do the same thing for their primary childrens birthday gifts. I am psyched about the wristband idea because it won't just be another bookmark or pencil, but might get looked at daily. My daughter received one from the parents of a classmate who died. It says return with honor. She wears it everyday. I hope the theme can be something that they think about often, because this world can be scary. Tell me what you think, please.

I think the themed bracelets are a great idea. My daughter just receive one for her birthday from her Primary teacher. She thinks she is so cool. (My daughter just turned five.) I also know that my stake did themed wristbands for Youth Conference last year. It is a simple reminder that the kids can wear, but it doesn't stick out too much, since so many people use them. Good Luck!

Thanks Miriam. It is nice to have some reassurance, now and then. I hate feeling buyers remorse, so I'm usually overly cautious. I heard from two people who want to go in on it, so I am going to take the plunge and buy them. I do think it is a great gift choice. Three of my children are in primary, so I think I'll get several different colors, so each one can be their personal wristband. What color is your daughter's? Do you have a hot color to recommend?

My daughter's is blue. That is her current favorite color. I would get colors that appeal to both boys and girls. I am not good at predicting trends, but my daughter seems to be ahead of the game. For the last two years her favorite color was orange, and it made quite a comeback--maybe blue is the way to go. Honestly I don't know--your children should have good opinions on the cool colors for your area.

The primarywristbands.com site had more than 5 colors or glow in the dark. Since I couldn't decide and children are unpredictable, this was good for me. Both orange and blue! They were more than $.20 less than the others and should be here before the first Sunday in January. I called to get the better price and no shipping - anyone out there should too. Happy New Year! The online convience is so good for a mother of many like myself.
