Christmas Traditions

During the holidays it is so easy to focus on creating traditions in your family. As you look back at what you did to celebrate Christmas when you were growing up, you probably did similar things every year. While you do want to provide that for your children, you may choose to leave some of your traditions behind and create new ones for your family. It can also be difficult to create family traditions when you are not at home for Christmas, but visiting family. My favorite traditions are the ones that focus on the true meaning of Christmas. Growing … Continue reading

A Primary Lesson that Addresses Different Types of Learners

In previous articles, I detailed some ideas for teaching each type of the following learner: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. I also discussed how it is important for teachers to address each of these learners in their lessons. For this reason, my next two articles will describe two lessons that reaches all three types of learners. This article will be geared toward a primary grade level while the next article will focus more on a middle school class level. During the Christmas holiday season, my class reads the Gingerbread Man. We sequence the people or animals that the Gingerbread Man passes … Continue reading

Primary Time: November 2007 Sharing Time Theme

The Sharing Time theme for November is “My faith in Jesus Christ blesses my life. I am thankful for my many blessings.” The scripture is Doctrine and Covenants 59:7: “Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things.” There is no specific song to teach this month, though you may want to work on Christmas carols as a family. The hymn “Because I Have Been Given Much” p 219 would be a good selection as well. The theme is broken down into four weekly principles. The first principle focuses on being thankful for your home and family. The second … Continue reading

Primary Time: Five Ideas for Quarterly Activities

It is the beginning of the new year, if you are in the Primary presidency, then you are most likely planning the quarterly activities for the entire year. Here are five ideas for activities that may be fun for your Primary to complete. 1) One fun activity is to have the Primary have a cultural Christmas party. You can ask different returned missionaries from your ward share a little bit about the countries that they served in, and how those countries celebrated Christmas. You can have the guests set up in different rooms, and have the children rotate through. You … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Christmas in the Book of Mormon

One way to discuss the importance of Christ’s mission on the earth, and keep the focus on the season is to have a family home evening on the first Christmas in the Americas. This is an interesting lesson that should keep your children interested. It can also lead to a discussion of the importance of believing in and following Christ. You can open the lesson by telling about the prophecy of Samuel the Lamanite. You can read the prophecy he gave concerning knowing when Christ was born in Helaman 14:1-8. You can then read about how the wicked Nephites were … Continue reading

Primary Time: December Theme “He Sent His Son.”

This month the theme for sharing time is “He Sent His Son.” This is a great theme for December since it focuses on the Savior’s birth. It will be easy to bring the theme into your home this month. You can easily plan a family home evening based on the lesson. You can extend the topic to talk about what happened in the Book of Mormon when Christ was born. You can talk about the signs that were shown to the people, and how that knowledge. It is important to remember that Christ’s birth affects everyone in the world, and … Continue reading

LDS Christmas Devotional

The First Presidency Christmas Devotional will be held on December 3, 2006. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. MST. The broadcast will be available at your local ward building. This is a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season. The devotional will include music from the Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra of Temple Square. In years past there have been a variety of guest soloists who have sung with the Tabernacle Choir. The music each year is beautiful, and a reminder of the reason that we celebrate Christmas. The members of the First Presidency also speak at the devotional. … Continue reading

Five Ways to Focus on the True Meaning of Christmas

One of my least favorite things about Christmas is the commercialization that draws the attention away from the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas is the day set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ our Savior. It is important that we remember that as we go throughout the holiday season. Through careful planning you can provide your family with a meaningful and uplifting holiday experience. It is important to schedule these events in early, so that they do not become neglected or pushed aside. 1) You should attend or put on a Nativity. This is fun activity for children, … Continue reading

Primary Time: Christmas Activity

One idea for a Primary activity day is to have a Christmas craft fair. This can be expanded to include a service project as well. This day can be fairly inexpensive, but a lot of fun for the children. It is generally best to plan this activity for sometime in November, because December is so busy for everyone. Also if you are completing care packages for the missionaries from your ward, you will want to have to mail the packages to the missionaries. You should open the activity with a spiritual reminder of why we celebrate Christmas. Here is an … Continue reading

Branching Out: Winter Crafts With Tree Branches

What a wonderful time of the year. A time of storms. A time of fallen branches. A time of crafts to make with those fallen branches. Ok, maybe the song doesn’t quite go like that, but there are an awful lot of branches about. Before you take them to the chipper or the compost, bring them indoors and use them for winter crafts. These bare branches are good raw material for craft projects that open up a conversation about forests and forest animals. One of my favorite simple branch crafts that is floating around Pinterest is a designer’s delight. Take … Continue reading
