Primary Time: Baptism

The only Primary class that I ever taught was right after I graduated high school. I was assigned to teach the children who were turning eight and being baptized that year. I only taught the one summer before I left to go to school, but I was able to attend four out of the five of my student's baptism. One had already been baptized before I began teaching. This is an important time in each child's life as they make the decision to be baptized.

It is important to support the children during this time. As a primary teacher you should try to attend each child's baptism. This is one of the best ways to show your support to the children. I gave each child a small journal as well. You do not need to give a gift if you can not afford it, but a card or note is a nice touch. This just lets the children know that you care about them.

It is also important that all members show support to the newly baptized Primary children. If one of the children you have taught in the past, you may want to attend the baptism as well. Even if you can not attend the baptism, be sure to congratulate the child on his important decision and commitment.

If one of your nieces or nephews or other family members is being baptized, it is also important to show your support. If you live close enough that you can attend, then it is important to try to attend. If you are too far away you can send a card of congratulations. You can also call and talk to the child near the date.

When your child is preparing to be baptized you can hold a family home evening lesson about the commitments that your child will be making. You can also have friends and family over for an open house after the baptism. This is a wonderful day that should be honored.

Another inexpensive gift is a homemade, personalized bookmark. You can use cardstock and either stamps or markers, depending on your supplies; if you are really 'groovy', you can laminate it.
