Primary Rewards

So, our primary is very small as I’ve mentioned before. Every kid usually gets more than his or her fair share of chances to do the talk, scripture and prayers in primary. But, I noticed a trend in our ward. There was a small handful of kids that kept volunteering for the talk and scripture each week, but would come unprepared the following week. This was frustrating me. The prior presidency told me that they always had a talk on hand in case a child came unprepared, but it had turned into every single week we were reading talks from … Continue reading

We Teach Children, Not Lessons

Last night, we had our stake primary leadership training meeting. We had a great meeting and I left feeling inspired to be a better primary president for the year ahead. I wanted to share a few things that I learned from that meeting. First, they asked us what was the ONE thing we wanted our kids to learn this year. People gave answers such as that Heavenly Father loves them, or to Choose the Right and recognize when they make right choices, etc. They told us to keep whatever that one thing is in mind throughout the year as we … Continue reading

Resources for Children on LDS.org

As the primary president in my ward, and mother of three little ones, I’m always looking for ideas for lessons, sharing time, family home evening, etc. I have spoken before about the great website sugardoodle.net. But, it looks like the church is beefing up their website a bit to contain similar resources for parents, families, and teachers looking for additional materials online. They have created a new section of the website dedicated to children’s resources. It can be found here. I know that I am personally excited to explore what there is to offer, and what they will be adding … Continue reading

The Eyes Have It

I love this picture of my daughter. The image captures a real sense of connection between her and anyone viewing the photo. It’s all about the eyes. It’s truly astounding how much of an impact two orbs can have on a single shot. The direction of your subject’s eyes can totally change the tone of a picture. In the shot, my daughter is not looking directly into the camera. Rather, her head is slightly angled to create a feeling of candidness. In addition, the twinkle in her eyes match the sly little grin she’s flashing, making the viewer of the … Continue reading

The End of Free Checking? – Interview with a Banker

Last week, I had the chance to chat with my anonymous banker friend, and he gave me permission to pass along some very interesting information. Here are his thoughts: Some banks have stopped offering free checking. But why? Is this just a matter of the banks getting greedy and looking for ways to stick it to their customers? Are they trying to make up for money lost from loans gone bad? No. There are many factors, but I’ll try to keep it fairly simple. First of all, banks are in business to make money. Shocking, I know! Even though they … Continue reading

Good Summer Activities

It is time to begin thinking of summer activities for your children. If you have Primary aged children you may consider putting together a summer group. This group will give your children a structured activity once a month. It is also a chance to have your children maintain their friendships with church members. This is especially important if you live outside of Utah, and your neighbors aren’t necessarily members. You can have as much structure or as little structure as you want. You may consider planning a craft activity each week, along with a story time. It might be nice … Continue reading

Don’t Be Shocked About Grades- Stay Informed

It happens every year all over the country at every school in most every grade. Parents are completely shocked when their children comes home with a failing grade on his/her report card. The shock comes from two persons to blame- the parent and the teacher. There is no excuse for parents not to be continuously aware of how well (or not so well) their child is doing in school on both academic and behavioral terms. However many parents and teachers tend to wait to become educated on the situation until it is too late to be reversed. Once the grade … Continue reading

Programs to Aide Teacher Spending

It is a well-known fact that many teachers spend out of pocket money for school needs and supplies. I am no exception from this group. I have realized that it seems that lower grades teachers spend more out of pocket money than higher-grade teachers. There are more activities and projects to be completed in primary grades. This is partly due to teachers being self-contained and teaching across the curriculum. In 2004, it was estimated that teachers spent an average of $458 out of their own pocket for school supplies and such. In 2006 the amount jumped to $552. Although teachers … Continue reading

I Just Made $250 by Paying My Bills

Perhaps I should start this post with a disclaimer. I am going to talk about credit cards. Personally, I have a love – hate relationship with the convenient little pieces of plastic. If you are able to pay the balance on your credit card (in full) each month…continue reading. If not, this is not the post for you. Around this time last year I made a decision to pay all of my bills with my credit card. This included my auto insurance, my utility bills, my cable, internet, phone…etc…). In fact, I used my card to buy everything – groceries, … Continue reading
