Preparing for Your Primary Program

I can’t believe that another year has come for us to do a primary program. Last year, it was the first time I had ever written a primary program. But, this year, I am excited for the program, and can’t wait to see what the kids are going to do. We started by organizing all of our songs. We are sticking to the songs listed in the outline for the year with just a few changes. Our songs that we are going to sing are: As a Child of God (which is our new song for the year) Choose the … Continue reading

Primary Leadership Training

I had the opportunity to attend a Primary Leadership meeting this past week on Temple Square. It was led and conducted by the Primary General Presidency. I have to say that I’m so glad that I went, because it not only gave me some great ideas, but it calmed my heart a little bit about this new calling. First, the music was powerful. And, you know what we sang? Primary music! I realized the power behind those songs that the children sing, and I realized how easily we can feel the spirit with the primary music. I can’t wait to … Continue reading

Preparing a Talk with your Primary Child

My four-year-old was assigned her first talk this past Sunday in Primary. I was told that it could be anywhere from 5 seconds in length to 10 minutes. That’s a big gap huh? But, I guess for the sunbeams, you never know what to expect! Her topic was, “The mission of the church is to invite all to come unto Christ” That’s a big topic for such a little person. How do you write talks with your primary-aged child? This can be a little daunting. Do you write it for them? Do you let them write it? What’s the protocol? … Continue reading

Primary Power

My sweet daughter participated in her first primary program this past week. Lovely. I was so excited. She is such a sweet little girl, and being a Sunbeam is a special time. They are just so excited about everything, and not jaded. You know, like the older 10-year-old girls who are just itching to get to Young Women. But, that is a long way away, so luckily, I can just focus on the present and enjoying her excitement for participating in her first program. But, I was shocked when she was given her part. It was 3 lines!!! Doesn’t that … Continue reading

Primary Time: 2008 Theme

The new 2008 theme for Primary Sharing time has been announced. The overlying theme is “I Am a Child of God.” This is a wonderful thing to teach your children. It is one of the most important things that children can learn. Once they realize that Heavenly Father is real and loves them, their entire outlook on life will change. It is important to help your children to realize that Heavenly Father is watching over their lives. The scripture for the theme is Psalm 82:6: “All of you are children of the most High.” You can help your children to … Continue reading

Primary Time: Bringing the Scripture Stories to Life for Your Children

Do you want your children to really learn the scriptures? The summer is a great time to spend some extra time teaching your children the scripture stories. If you plan well you can really bring the stories to life. You can focus on one or two stories a week. It is important that while you do any of the following suggestions you still take the time to talk about the concept the story is teaching us. 1) The easiest way to teach your children the stories from the scriptures is to tell them the stories. Don’t Overlook the Power of Small Talk

Think your time is precious and that if you have to chat your way through one more cocktail party or networking event you will scream? If you are trying to build a business, all those opportunities for small talk can actually result in an increased profit margin and a fatter bottom line. Small talk can really yield big results… Done properly–and that means listening attentively and asking the right questions, you can actually garner quite a bit about a person from a brief, seemingly meaningless conversation. Chatting about the weather, sports, current events, or other typical topics found buzzing around … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Nourishing Power of Hymns”

In his talk “The Nourishing Power of Hymns” Elder Jay E Jensen stresses the important role that hymns have in our church. He speaks of experiences where hymns invited in the spirit and he was able to learn from them. He speaks of fond memories that involve singing the hymns. Elder Jensen goes on to speak about how hymns invite the spirit. He shares the story of two missionaries who were able to diffuse a tense meeting by singing a hymn. Elder Jensen went on to say: “Music in Church meetings and classes should facilitate a spirit of worship, revelation, … Continue reading

20 Minute Power Abs

20 minutes a day can really help you with your abdominal. For those of you who feel like your mid-section is in the worst shape, be aware that health wise excess abdominal fat is actually the worst kind of fat period. The mid-section houses two of your most important organs involved in fat metabolism and the process of sugar. Your liver and your kidneys can actually become ‘squished’ in too much abdominal fat and this reduces their effectiveness. Women, especially, are in danger of type 2 diabetes because of excessive abdominal fat according to the American Dietetic Association. Now to … Continue reading

Living with Engineers: Spouses, not Supervisors

Living with an engineer involves more than just having to hear the word “efficient” all of the time. A lot of engineers end up in management positions, and that means one thing: they’re bred to supervise. The word “efficient” does get bandied about, in how they think tasks ought to be accomplished. I already shared my story about measuring butter for baking, and how my husband felt about that. That’s not the only time something like that has happened. Sometimes, I find Jonathan trying to supervise me when we’re completing a project. To be fair, sometimes I ask for it. … Continue reading
