Preparing a Talk with your Primary Child

My four-year-old was assigned her first talk this past Sunday in Primary. I was told that it could be anywhere from 5 seconds in length to 10 minutes. That’s a big gap huh? But, I guess for the sunbeams, you never know what to expect! Her topic was, “The mission of the church is to invite all to come unto Christ” That’s a big topic for such a little person. How do you write talks with your primary-aged child? This can be a little daunting. Do you write it for them? Do you let them write it? What’s the protocol? … Continue reading

Dinnertime as a Sacrament

I really enjoy cooking and trying new recipes. I have several cookbooks and I go through them regularly, looking for tasty tidbits I have overlooked. I feel a sense of satisfaction when I hit on something that is unique, tasty, and easy to prepare. Then I set it on the table, and receive a four-part chorus of groans. “What is this?” “I don’t know, but it looks like dog food.” “Yeah, it smells like it too.” “I’m not eating this.” My husband, thankfully, isn’t that picky and will clean up the leftovers, of which there are plenty, because the children … Continue reading

Focus on the Sacrament

One of the most important things that we do at church each Sunday is partake of the Sacrament. Here is a list of five things you can do to make taking the Sacrament more meaningful. 1) Ideally your preparation should be taking place all week. Take time … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine:The Gift of the Sacrament

This week’s Gospel Doctrine lesson is entitled “Love One Another, As I Have Loved You.” When we read Luke 22:1-38, we get an idea of that love. In these verses, Jesus institutes the sacrament for the first time. The sacrament represents Christ’s atoning sacrifice, and helps us remember His love for each of us. The second half of the chapter, which we will read in two weeks, deals with the atonement of Jesus Christ. In the October 1996 General Conference, Elder Russell M. Nelson called the atonement “the single greatest act of love of all recorded history.” In the Garden … Continue reading

Young Men: Dress Appropriately

Often we hear talks about the importance of dressing modestly. In fact a recent Sacrament meeting was devoted entirely to the importance of modest dress. Often when we hear these talks we think of the young women. However the principle behind modesty, which is showing respect to ourselves and others can also be extended to the young men. First it is important to realize that the clothing that people wear makes a statement about the person. This is one of the reasons for the dress codes at BYU and other church schools. The image that you project to those around … Continue reading

Remember the Sabbath

The Sabbath is a day that we take time to worship Christ. It is important to prepare ourselves for this wonderful day of rest and worship. Many people mistakenly leave church at church and only focus on the gospel on Sunday, but in order to truly be ready for the Sabbath, we need to focus on the gospel throughout the week. As we pray each day it is important to take time to reflect on the things we need to repent of or to focus more on. This focus helps us when it comes time to take the Sacrament and … Continue reading
