Focus during Scripture Study

How do you prepare yourself to study the scriptures? What frame of mind are you in when you kneel to pray? It is important to come prepared so that you can learn as you study and pray. In 3 Nephi 11 we read about how it took the Nephites three times before they were able to understand the voice from heaven. In verses 5 and 6 we read: “And again the third time they did hear the voice, and did open their ears to hear it; and their eyes were toward the sound thereof; and they did look steadfastly towards … Continue reading

Scripture Study Rut?

Scripture study is an essential part of gaining a testimony of the gospel. It is also important to do so that you can continue to strengthen your testimony through gospel study. However, most people go through times of really good personal scripture study and times when the study is either not happening or is not meaningful. Sometimes you get in a rut, and it can be difficult to break out of it. If you are stuck in a scripture study rut, try changing up the way that you read the scriptures. For example if you read a few chapters a … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 17:12-15

Nephi has just been commanded to build a ship, something he’s never done before in his life, but the Lord promised to show him the way, and Nephi is willing to give it a try. He makes a bellows to blow the fire, knowing he’ll need the heat to construct the tools for the building of the ship, and now he comments on the fact that they haven’t built many fires during the time they’ve been in the wilderness. 12. For the Lord had not hitherto suffered that we should make much fire, as we journeyed in the wilderness; for … Continue reading

Scripture Study 1 Nephi 17:1-6

Laman and Lemuel have been chastened (again) and all is well in the little campsite. Food has been provided to the travelers and they are ready to resume their journey. 1. And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness. When I first read this, my thought was, “How terrible to give birth out in the wilderness.” But then I realized, it probably … Continue reading

Preparedness and Finances

One important aspect of preparing yourself and your family is financial preparedness. The church urges us to avoid debt, and to get out of debt as quickly as possible. It also teaches us to take financial responsibility for ourselves by saving money for emergencies and planning for retirement. If you have a lot of debt, it is important to focus on getting out of debt as much as you can. You can limit your discretionary spending and begin to budget to do this. If you need help setting up your budget or learning how to manage your money, you can … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 16:7-10

Nephi has just delivered an impassioned speech to his brothers about the importance of repentance and turning our sins over to the Lord. He has told the consequences of sin and the fate that awaits the wicked. For the time being, they seem subdued and aren’t causing contention. It’s in this quiet lull that we read about the weddings that take place. As we recall, Nephi and his brothers returned to Jerusalem to ask Ishmael and his family to travel into the wilderness with them. Some have asked why they didn’t take Ishmael with them in the first place, rather … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 15:35-36

After having a vision wherein Nephi saw the destruction of his brothers and their descendants, he returns to the camp of his father where he finds Laman and Lemuel waiting for him. They are troubled concerning the words of their father and they want to ask Nephi to explain things to them. The memory of his vision fresh in his mind, he wants to convince them to change their ways, and his earnest desire, coupled with their newfound willingness to listen, leads to a discussion about repentance and the need to live righteously. Perhaps concerned about the fate of their … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 15:26-34

Nephi’s rebellious brothers are finally asking him questions about the words their father spake, and he is eagerly answering them. Anxious that his brothers finally see the truthfulness of the Gospel and repent, he has exhorted them with his whole soul. 26. And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw? 27. And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water. I think it’s interesting that Nephi picked up … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 14:3-7

We are still taking an in-depth look into the vision Nephi had when he inquired of the Lord concerning the meaning of his father’s dream and also to ask about the fate of his descendants. In our last Scripture Study, we learned that the righteous will be numbered among the House of Israel. Now we will read about the fate of the wicked. 3. And that great pit, which hath been digged for them by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil and his children, that he might lead away the souls of men down to … Continue reading
