Have You Ever Kept A Scripture Journal?

These days it seems like we are living in a digital world. I have the scriptures on my IPod that I can easily pull out and read. In church, I frequently see people using their smart devices to read their scriptures in class. My primary chorister even uses her IPad to lead the music each week. While technology is a beautiful tool, I wonder about its effects on my own scripture study. No longer do we use red pencils to read our scriptures. And, are the days gone where your children might catch you reading your scriptures and be inspired … Continue reading

New Personal Progress Booklets

Have you seen the new Personal Progress booklets? They’re fabulous. Take everything you loved about Personal Progress before, and now put a fresh look on it, spiral bind it for easy usage, and invite all women (and men) to participate. I love how updated the book is, but more importantly, I love how functional it now is. With the addition of the value Virtue to the Young Women theme and program, the church needed to update many of its materials including posters, manuals, and the Personal Progress book. The organization of the book is very similar to how it was … Continue reading

Maintaining Personal Worthiness

As LDS people it is important to focus on personal worthiness daily. These habits and choices can make it much easier to have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion. It can make it easier to face life’s many trials and to hold your family together during difficult times. Personal worthiness can also be looked at, as making sure that your personal testimony remains strong. One of the most important things you can do to keep your testimony strong is to continue to build your relationship with your Savior and Heavenly Father on a daily basis. This means taking time … Continue reading

Scripture Study and My Day

Today has been one of those days where I rattle around, attempting to do a long list of tasks, and not getting anything done. As I sat down at my computer preparing to begin my writing for the day I asked myself what was wrong with me today. And it hit me that I hadn’t read my scriptures yet today. So I went and read them, and prayed, and I’ve felt so much more peaceful today. Daily scripture reading is a chance to focus and to be still. During the time that we read our scriptures each day it shows … Continue reading

Scripture Study Rut?

Scripture study is an essential part of gaining a testimony of the gospel. It is also important to do so that you can continue to strengthen your testimony through gospel study. However, most people go through times of really good personal scripture study and times when the study is either not happening or is not meaningful. Sometimes you get in a rut, and it can be difficult to break out of it. If you are stuck in a scripture study rut, try changing up the way that you read the scriptures. For example if you read a few chapters a … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Teaching Personal Application of Gospel Principles

Family home evening is a wonderful way to teach your children the gospel. During family home evening you can model gospel study habits for your children, so that they can begin to apply them to their lives. One important skill to teach your children is personal application of the principles found in scripture stories and lessons. This should happen in all of your lessons, but you may want to spend a week or two focusing on these things. First your children need to be able to recognize the principles behind the stories. When they are young you may simply tell … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Prayer and Personal Revelation

Lesson #10 in the Joseph Smith manual for this year’s course of study is entitled, “Prayer and Personal Revelation.” Joseph Smith restored many things when he restored the gospel to the earth. He demonstrated ways in which we could address our Heavenly Father, as a close personal friend and indeed, a father, and he taught the young Church the power of prayer and the very real concept of personal revelation. He pointed out that the Lord had never said He would stop speaking to His children in the latter days, so we should not be so surprised that He speaks … Continue reading

Primary Time: Scripture Study for Your Children

I remember when my parents began having family scripture study. I was in first or second grade. They kept it short, each person who could read, read one verse. At that rate it took us years to read the Book of Mormon. However, the biggest benefit was that it made us comfortable reading the scriptures. I know that most of my sisters and brothers read the scriptures on their own now, and that they started when they were children. When you read aloud at home, you are not as uncomfortable when you make a mistake. It makes reading in front … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 16:26-32

Lehi’s family is wandering in the wilderness, and they are starving. The bows have lost their springs, and Nephi’s high quality steel bow was their last chance for survival. When his bow breaks, his brothers begin to murmur, and even Lehi complains against the Lord. But after Nephi speaks to his father and shows him loving respect befitting his position as patriarch of the family and prophet of the Lord, Lehi repents and goes to the Lord to inquire where Nephi should go to look for food. 26. And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord said … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 16:7-10

Nephi has just delivered an impassioned speech to his brothers about the importance of repentance and turning our sins over to the Lord. He has told the consequences of sin and the fate that awaits the wicked. For the time being, they seem subdued and aren’t causing contention. It’s in this quiet lull that we read about the weddings that take place. As we recall, Nephi and his brothers returned to Jerusalem to ask Ishmael and his family to travel into the wilderness with them. Some have asked why they didn’t take Ishmael with them in the first place, rather … Continue reading
