People First, Tasks Second

In the many different roles we fill as members of the church, parents, in our callings and our jobs it is so easy to become focused on the stuff that we forget the people. Personally as a mother and wife, I often get so focused on what I have or have not accomplished around the house, that I forget the reason I spend so much time at home anyway.

This can be done in almost any role we fill. As a teacher it is easy to become so wrapped up in covering all the material in your lesson, that you forget to step back and have meaningful discussions. These discussions are what help people to have spiritual insights on how to apply the gospel to their lives.

It is important that we each regularly take the time to examine our actions and our intentions to make sure they are going the right direction. If you find yourself snapping at your children, because you need to finish something right now, then you should step back and readjust.

In the long run, your son is not going to remember that your dishes did not get done that day, but they will remember if you took the time to bandage a boo boo or read his favorite story to him. Similarly the relationships that we build should focus on supporting those around us. While there are certain tasks that need to be accomplished, at times they may not be completed on time or very well. This is okay as long as you are nurturing the most important relationships in your life.

It is important to take time to teach your children that people come first as well. You can do this through the way you treat them. Additionally you may want to plan so that your children can serve others. Another great way to teach this is to encourage your children to help each other with schoolwork, chores and other projects. One of the most difficult skills to learn is to be kind to those who we love the most. Working together as a family can help in this regard as well.
