Obeying From Trust

Earlier this week, we talked about obeying the Savior from love. A comment in response to that blog made me think about another reason we obey the Savior – because we trust Him. Oddly enough (or perhaps not), the subject raised its head again as I was studying this week’s Relief Society/Elder’s Quorum lesson. As I discussed, the Savior wants us to obey Him out of love. However, even if we love someone, it can be difficult to trust them. Take for instance your marriage. If you have trouble trusting your spouse on some issue – financial, spiritual, or even … Continue reading

Obeying From Love

When it comes down to obedience, there are three main reasons to obey. The first comes from fear – looming punishment frightens us. The second comes from reward – we seek the prize or present. The third comes from love – we want to please the person who has asked for our obedience. Which of these do you think the Lord wants to have motivate us? We can choose to follow the commandments because of the looming fear of hell. Especially if you grew up outside of the church, you may have been exposed to images of evil pits and … Continue reading

Love Letters – Love & Poets

We’ve talked about Valentine’s, the history behind it and how we celebrate it. Now we are going to take a look at great romances in history as a part of our 14 Days of Romance here at the Marriage Blog. I thought it very appropriate that the first romance we look at is between two very popular and beautiful poets from the 19th century, perhaps you’ve heard of them? Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning. The Brownings Their romance was born in January of 1845, when Robert Browning began what would become known as the greatest correspondence of all time. Elizabeth … Continue reading

Divorce is Often a Gift

As a single parent it’s easy to mourn all the things our children miss out on. Feeling guilty becomes second nature. Our children don’t have their father’s influence and love on a daily basis, they don’t get the benefit of having a stern parent and a gentler parent. They don’t get to share in their day to day triumphs with their father. The list goes on and on. Only I kiss Hailey goodnight, only I see her every morning, only I am there when she needs someone to lean on. It’s easy to see how we can get caught up … Continue reading

Time Out

For a while in our household we’ve been trying to determine what our child actually understands in order to be able to effectively punish him if he is doing something dangerous or intentionally disobeying his parents time and time again. It is not something we look forward to or enjoy. Our son is infallible in our eyes (at least he was before he started disobeying) and the empathy we feel for him is strong. At the same time we don’t want to create a monster. We’d rather have a child who, at the very least, knows that if he disobeys … Continue reading

Before You Visit The Graveyard

It is not unusual for genealogists to get excited about visiting a graveyard or cemetery. One way to get a confirmation about the birth or death date of an ancestor is to read it off of his or her tombstone. There is the possibility that you will discover information about ancestors you were not aware of on your visit. Your ancestors may have buried husbands and wives next to each other, or within the same plot. There may be more relatives resting nearby. A graveyard can be a very helpful resource for your genealogy research. Before you rush off to … Continue reading

A Lifestyle Choice

Paul urges believers to be living sacrifices, Romans 12:1-2. What does that mean exactly? It means that being a Christian is a lifestyle choice. It affects who we marry, what work we do, the friends we have, what we choose to do with our time. It means that being a Christian affects our day to day choices and decisions. It’s no good being a Sunday Christian and thinking you can do what you like the rest of the week. That means nothing to God. That is not commitment. That is not letting Christ rule your life. These are the type … Continue reading

The Importance of God’s Word

The book of Nehemiah shows us, among other things, the importance of reading, and obeying God’s Word. Nehemiah 8:1-8 As Ezra reads God’s Word, the people praise God. The people gather and Ezra reads God’s words to them. All morning he reads to them and the Bible says they ‘were attentive’ to the Word, verse 3. They also worshipped the Lord. Some Things to Think About How important is God’s Word to you? Reading God’s Word should encourage us to worship Him. Have you read God’s Word today? If not, why not take time to do it now? What has … Continue reading

An Emotional Experience

Last week I watched the Compass program – Billy Graham Down Under. It was an emotional experience and one that brought back memories. I was a child who went forward in that Sydney crusade. Strangely enough I could not remember that much about the events. I remembered Billy Graham giving the call to commit to Jesus. My friend and I both looked at each other and got up and walked without a word. I remembered more the emotion of the time. We were two of the 57,000 people who responded. The Archbishop of Sydney who was a 15 year old … Continue reading

How Can You Tell if You Are Really a Christian?

How can you tell if you have really come to know Jesus and entered into a relationship with Him? In our home bible study group we recently started studying the John’s letters and 1 John 2 gives some answers to this question. I John 2:3 says we ‘know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commands.’ Obeying rules and regulations are not our entry ticket to heaven. That comes only through knowing Jesus. But, when we do know Jesus and have come into a relationship with Him, then we will want to please Him by keeping … Continue reading
