My Memories of the Tabernacle

I grew up in Utah, so I have had the luxury of visiting the church sites in downtown Salt Lake City on a regular basis. When I realized that they were rededicating the Tabernacle, I was glad that I could participate in the event even though I now live out of state. It was interesting to hear the history surrounding the Tabernacle and all the events that took place there. My first memory of the tabernacle involves my parents attending some sort of conference (stake or region) and I accompanying them. I was quite small four or five years old. … Continue reading

Conference Center Turns Ten Years Old

I don’t know if the last decade has gone as quickly for you as it has for me, but can you believe that the Conference Center is ten years old this year? Ten years ago this month, the first General Conference was held in this historic building, giving a break to the much smaller (but still impressive) Tabernacle. The Conference Center has become part of Salt Lake City and definitely part of Temple Square. After a decade of use, it’s still as beautiful, inspiring, and useful as the day it was completed. One of my favorite features of the Conference … Continue reading

Marriage and Spiritual Quests

Are you and your spouse of the same faith? Did you convert to his religion in order to marry, or did she convert to yours? (If you came from different ones.) Or maybe neither of you had one before marriage and adopted one together. Or maybe you didn’t. Right after Wayne and I first got married I’d pass churches and feel guilty I didn’t have a religion. “Maybe we should see about finding a church?” I once ventured. “Maybe we shouldn’t. Why start going now anyway? You never wanted to before.” I couldn’t put my finger on what was happening … Continue reading

Latter-Day Hymns: The Morning Breaks, the Shadows Flee

The first hymn in the LDS hymnal is penned by Parley P. Pratt and set to music by George Careless. Often performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I have fond memories of hearing it sung during the opening session of General Conference. We would travel to Logan to watch Conference with my grandmother, and hearing this song brings to mind memories of lying on her carpet, waiting for the talks to begin. The television cameras usually panning Temple Square while this song is sung, so I always associate it with the gorgeous flowers that grow all over the Square. First … Continue reading

Mr. Krueger’s Christmas (1980)

My very first memories of this movie take me back to the Visitor’s Center on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was about five, and we settled into the plush seats, knowing we were about to see something special. Jimmy Stewart stars as Willie Krueger, a widowed janitor who lives in the basement of the apartment building where he works. He’s spent the day sweeping pine needles out of the lobby as the tenants brought their trees up to their apartments, and now he’s ready to get his own place decorated for the day. His apartment is small … Continue reading

Tristi’s Favorite Christmas Movies

It was Thanksgiving yesterday, and that means Christmas movies! I always kickstart my holiday season on Thanksgiving night by watching a Christmas movie, and at least once a week until the Big Day arrives, I watch another. Christmas movies are a wonderful way to bring the joy of the season into our homes. In no particular order, here are the films I watch every year, without fail. 1. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The Herdsmans are the worst behaved kids in the whole town. When they catch word that the local church serves refreshments, they start attending, and they even … Continue reading

General Conference: “If These Old Walls Could Talk”

In his talk “If These Old Walls Could Talk” Bishop H David Burton talks briefly about the restoration of the Tabernacle. He explains that every effort was made to restore it as accurately as possible. Bishop Burton speaks of how they worked to reinforce the walls and put in a new foundation. He tells us about the new roof, and seats with more legroom. He thanks those who worked so long to restore this building to the way it was built. Bishop Burton goes on to speak about the many events that have taken place in the Tabernacle. He speaks … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: May 20th – 26th

We had another great week in the LDS Families blog. We took a look at our Gospel Doctrine lesson and expanded our horizons a bit. Gospel Doctrine: This week’s Sunday School lesson is entitled “Thy Faith Hath Saved Thee.” It covered a variety of ways that people expressed their faith in the Lord and were spiritually saved because of it. In Cry Day and Night, we discussed how prayer affects us. In Men Ought Always to Pray, we talked about how to pray without fainting. In They…Rebuked Him, we talked about how other people might affect our relationship with God … Continue reading
