Mutual Theme 2009 and New Year's DVDby Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger 22 Oct 2008 10:31 AM The mutual theme for 2009 is based on 1 Timothy 4:12 "Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." Additionally leaders are asked to read the talk "Be Thou an Example" by President Thomas S Monson. You can find the talk in the May 2005 Ensign. This is an excellent theme for the youth, in a world where it is becoming harder to live the values that the gospel teaches. This theme gives the leaders of the church as well as families, an excellent opportunity to talk about the standards of the church. It is a great time to review the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet as well. You may want to incorporate the theme into a stake standards night at the beginning of the year. Additionally you should talk to the youth about the importance of being an example in they way that they choose to live their lives. The quiet example of clean language, and kindness can open doors for them to share the gospel. People also respect those that are willing to live up to their standards. You may want to have discussions on situations where they are being examples and may not realize it. If you are the parent of youth, you may want to adopt this as a family theme as well. You could devote just one family home evening lesson a month to reviewing one or two of the standards set forth in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet. This can make a big difference in your children understanding and embracing the standards. It is important that you lead by example and live the standards as well. The church has announced a DVD will be available to help youth leaders plan activities for a New Year's celebration. This DVD can be used as part of the celebration on New Year's Eve or as a fireside. The DVD includes a message given by Elder Holland, and also talks by the general Young Men and Young Women presidencies. These may be an excellent addition to a fireside that introduces the new theme to your stake or ward.
