Top 10 Reasons to Be Glad Your Neighbors Are Mormon

Sure, everyone runs and hides when the missionaries come knocking, but you know there are times when you’re glad your neighbors are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 1. You mention in the morning that you have the sniffles and a slight cough. Your neighbor shows up the door that night with three course dinner and a smile. 2. You get lots of free movies. Sure, they are religious movies, but who knows when they will come in handy? It seems like every time the church magazine mails out a new one, your neighbor brings it … Continue reading

Meeting the (Mormon) Parents

When my sixteen year old sister-in-law called me last night to ask advice about her first meeting with her new boyfriend’s ‘straightlaced parents’, the first thing I thought to say was, “Don’t ask for a cup of coffee.” Of course, I gave her the old stalwart advice about being honest and being herself, but after she hung up, I thought about a few other tips I could give to any young man or young woman who wanted to make a good impression on their ‘straightlaced friend’s parents’. 1. Don’t ask for a cup of coffee or tea. 2. When asked … Continue reading

A Secret Nursery

I have a son that goes to the nursery, and he loves it. He gets to play, and run around, and have fun during the first two hours of church. But, somehow, during Sacrament meeting, which is last in my ward, he still manages to be a handful. He is tired, hungry, ready for a nap, and ends up just wanting to squirm in our laps for the entire last hour of church. It can be exhausting. There was one Sunday not too long ago where I just turned to my husband after 45 minutes of kids crying, getting up … Continue reading

Halloween Craziness

I’m not a big Halloween person. As a kid, I’m sure I was. But, now, not so much. However, I do have kids, so I’m trying to get into the spirit of Halloween a little more. My four-year-old has definitely figured it out. She knows what it’s all about. Candy. Lots and lots of Candy. My sister and I were talking about how it has gotten a little out of hand though. Since when did Halloween turn into a celebration as big as Christmas? It seems to last a week long now giving our kids enough candy to last until … Continue reading

Top 10 Ways to Tell Your Marriage Is Bellyup

We’ve been talking about ways to improve your marriage, and last week we enjoyed a humorous glimpse of how you can tell if you and your spouse should just be translated now and get it over with. (By the way, if most of the items on that list sounded familiar, I may have to send out a hit squad.) Now, let’s take a look at some sure signs that your marriage is at the other end of the spectrum. 1. You fight so much that when he says he is doing fine, you respond by snapping, “You’re wrong!” before you … Continue reading

Relief Society Presidents: Zina D. H. Young

Zina Diantha Huntington wondered in her youth why she could not have been born in mor exciting times. Ironically, only a year before her birth, Joseph Smith had received the First Vision, and while she was a child, the Book of Mormon was translated less than a hundred miles away. Born January 21, 1821 in Watertown, New York, Zina was the seventh of nine children born to William and Zina Baker Huntington. At one point, her father spent days studying the scriptures in an effort to choose sides in a controversy between the Presbyterians and the Congregationalists. He decided that … Continue reading

Punctuality, Sacrament, and Small Kids

One of the first acting principles I learned when I joined the church was not a gospel principle; it was the concept of Mormon Standard Time. As a punctual person, the constant lateness grated on my nerves. It took me well over a year to adapt to the more laid back approach. I suppose the Lord must have decided I needed to learn patience! Now that I have three children, getting out the door for anything – especially church – seems to take major effort. And given the fact that most of the Sacrament meetings I have attended start five … Continue reading

Top 10 Things You Don’t Want to Hear From Your Kids During Sacrament

The chapel is quiet. Every head is reverently bowed as men and women around you ponder the Savior’s atonement. Even the children seem to grasp the solemn nature of the divine gift from above. Then, suddenly, to your horror, your child makes an announcement that echoes through the silent room. Kids have a tendency to be oblivious to things that make their parents blush. They also seem to enjoy making the pronouncements in as a loud a voice as possible, particularly when everyone else can hear them. If you’re lucky, your kids won’t think to make one of these pronouncements: … Continue reading

Sunday Review: Quick to Observe

The first Sunday of the month, the Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum is taught by the Presidency of those groups, making them hard to prepare for in advance. But I would like to take a few moments to share the wonderful spiritual lesson I received yesterday, with the hopes that it brings the Spirit into your life. Our class yesterday came from the December 2006 issue of the Ensign, an article by Elder David Bednar entitled “Quick to Observe”. As I listened to the sister teaching the lesson, and then considered it during the drive home, I thought about the … Continue reading

Top Ten Ways to Keep Up With the Smith/Young/Kimballs

Every ward has at least one – a couple that appears to parent the ‘perfect Mormon family’. The rest of us have eyed these people with a combination of disbelief and awe, and consoled ourselves by repeating that everyone has problems and no person or family is perfect, no matter what reality may seem to be. In the secular world, this family that everyone strives to emulate would be known as the Jones, but in our Mormon world, they are more apt to be known as the Smiths or the Youngs or the Kimballs, if not by some other name … Continue reading
