Is It Hard to Get into Your Scriptures?

Some of us find it hard to get into our scriptures. No, it’s not because the pages are glued shut or the zipper is stuck! Often, when I sit down to read, I find my mind wandering the minute I turn the page. Instead of reading about Alma, I’m wondering if I’m out of milk and need to run to the store. Instead of commiserating with Nephi, I’m trying to figure out how to keep my children from fighting. What are some ways we can make our scripture time more productive? 1. First, we liken the scriptures unto ourselves. We … Continue reading

Marking Your Scriptures

One of the ways to get the most out of your scripture study is to mark your scriptures. There are many different ways to do this—probably as many ways as there are people who read, but I’d like to share some ideas here that may appeal. 1. Underlining the key words with a pen or a colored pencil to help your eye easily identify them. 2. Coloring the entire verse with a colored pencil or using light strokes with a crayon. 3. Using a bracket along the edge of the verse. 4. Circling the key words or phrases, while underlining … Continue reading

Delve Deeper into the Scriptures

Here are five easy tips to help you delve a little deeper into the scriptures. 1) Create a time and place for studying. If you set aside time when you can study every day this will help you have a set time to study. You should … Continue reading

Welcome To My New Co-Blogger

Beginning February 1, 2007 there was a new addition to our Christian Blogging family here at Families.com. I am very excited to work along side of Amy who, like me, has love and a passion for Christ, and a desire to share of His goodness with others. Amy has taken the opportunity to introduce herself in her first blog so I won’t go into that here but I encourage you to read it (link provided at the bottom of this page). It really is wonderful to be able to work at a job along side of another Christian. I know … Continue reading

Primary Time: Challenge Your Child to Have Personal Scripture Study

At what age do you begin to encourage your children to complete personal scripture study on their own? The answer may vary according to the child, but I recommend that you encourage this as soon as your child is able to read on his own. You may want to have your child start by reading the easy versions published by the church, but I would not encourage this for long. Your child may become dependent on the readers. Personally, I began personal scripture study when I was eight years old. I was challenged by my stake president to read the … Continue reading

Technology at Church

I have a love-hate relationship with technology at church. There are some amazing things out there, but they can be abused quite easily. Perhaps this love-hate relationship stems from the fact that I work with the youth and I see how often they turn to technology for myriad purposes—both the good and the not-so-reverent. But the youth definitely aren’t the only ones using technology in church. Have you ever looked down the pew and seen an adult playing a game on their phone? What about texting during church. I’ve seen that one a lot too. I have to admit it … Continue reading

Family Goals for the New Year

As the New Year approaches, it is a great time to sit down and make some goals as a family. You may want to change the overall tone in your home, or you may want to encourage your children to take on more responsibility in the home. You may want to focus on increasing the bond in your family or helping your family to feel the spirit more often. As a couple you should discuss some goals that you have in mind for your family and then you can discuss them with your children. If you have your children take … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 2:19-24

Nephi is concerned about his older brothers Laman and Lemuel. He sought to know the truthfulness of his father’s words and received a testimony through a heavenly visitation, and his brother Sam believes him but Laman and Lemuel will not listen. Nephi loves his brothers and wants them to taste the light of the gospel, and so he has spent much time praying for them. Verse nineteen: And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying: Blessed art thou, Nephi, because of thy faith, for thou hast sought me diligently, with lowliness of heart. Right there, the … Continue reading

Five Tips to Help You Read Sunday Lessons

One of my New Year’s resolutions for this year is to beginning reading the lessons before I go to class on Sundays. I have been successful at this in the past. But somehow, I have let this habit slip away. I have a lot of excuses—we lost our manuals in our recent move, the kids do not nap on Sundays anymore. I could go on and on, but the simple truth is that I stopped making it a priority. Here are five tips to help me (and you) keep this new resolution. 1) I like to read the next week’s … Continue reading
