Summer is fast approaching, and this is an especially important time to discuss modesty with your girls. Modesty is such an important concept for girls to grasp. You may want to set up a contract or a deal with your daughter if she is having a hard time with choosing to be modest. One of the best solutions to having a girl understand modesty is to begin discussing it with her when she is young. You can talk about the length of shorts and the importance of wearing shirts with sleeves when she is young, so that once she is … Continue reading

Young Women: Modesty

One common thing that many young women struggle with is dressing modestly. Often this is based more on a desire to fit in with the mold, then anything else. It is important to help your young woman realize the importance of dressing appropriately and treating her body respectfully. Here are five tips on helping your young woman with modesty. 1) It is important to begin young. If your daughter understands that she should not wear sleeveless dresses and tops at four, then it will be easier to enforce at fourteen. Also it is hard to set forth an arbitrary date … Continue reading

Season of Skimpiness: It’s Coming!

It is coming. That dreaded season of skimpy clothing. Are you ready for it? Do not worry. There is time, but you must start now. In approximately fourteen weeks from now you are going to want to wear less. The weather alone will force you into this unless you do not mind sweating, which I absolutely despise. Being in the northeastern part of the U.S. I am more of a cold weather person than a warm weather person. I can better tolerate the sub zero temperatures than the sizzling, scorching 80s. Yes, that is really HOT for us up here. … Continue reading

After Tina Fey’s Impersonation of Sarah Palin, SNL Mocks Homeschoolers

A record number of Americans tuned in this past weekend for the season premiere of Saturday Night Live to see Tina Fey impersonate Sarah Falin. It was hilarious. I even heard that Palin herself gave the performance a thumbs up. If you stayed tuned however, and you are a homeschooler, you may have very well been offended just two skits later. They used the standard school contest motif where two groups of students try to answer the most questions correctly. Homeschoolers, with biblical names and bad haircuts were on one side. Your average looking public school students were on the … Continue reading

Young Women: “Stay on the Path”

In her talk “Stay on the Path” Sister Elaine S Dalton spoke specifically to Young Women. She opens the talk by sharing a story about a hiking trail in a nearby canyon. The trail has a sign that reads “Stay on the Path.” This is especially important in this canyon because of the rough terrain, possible rattlesnakes, and unstable areas. Sister Dalton then shares an experience she had hiking with young women. There was a section of the hike called “Hurricane Pass,” because of the strong winds there. The young women were instructed to stay in the center of the … Continue reading

Resources for Islamic Clothing for Women

It can be difficult to find Islamic clothing here in America. A walk into any clothing store reveals row after row of revealing, low-cut tops and skintight pants. Need a skirt? Here, take this leather mini! While those options are fine for wearing around the house, a Muslim woman can’t dress that way in public. So, what’s a conservative Muslim woman to do? Most large cities in America offer culturally diverse clothing stores. If you live near a predominantly Middle Eastern, Indian, or Pakistani area, there are likely stores or boutiques selling appropriate clothes. If there are no modest clothing … Continue reading

Summer Wear for Muslims

Summer is upon us, and that brings a host of problems for the Muslim family. Just how do you enjoy the long, hot days and still maintain your conservative dress? Are you stuck inside all summer? Or, worse, must you suffer heat stroke to enjoy the sun and water? Not necessarily. Luckily, some clothing manufacturers have heeded the Muslims’ cries for modest summertime wear. [h]Summertime Dress Code[/h] Before we get to that, what should Muslims wear in the heat? Exactly what they should wear in any other weather, except of a lighter, thinner material! I do know some covered Muslims … Continue reading
