Review: Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga Video Game

When you have an elementary school boy, then chances are pretty good that he is into both Legos and light sabers. Even before seeing the movie, my son was turning paper towel tubes into light sabers. So when we spotted Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga at a local GameStop, I wondered if I would ever get out of the store. Pop-pop came to the rescue, as pop-pops usually do, purchasing the game for number one grandson, along with a few others. Hey, at least they were used and on sale for a buy two get one free day. The … Continue reading

LDS Movie Review: The Singles 2nd Ward (2008)

We all remember the gang from “The Singles Ward” – Jonathan, Cammie, DeVerl, Hyrum, Eldon, Dallen? Well, some years have gone by and Halestorm decided to make another film about our anxious to get married friends, but now Dallen is the only one who isn’t married. It’s the morning of Zak’s wedding and everyone has gathered at the temple for the big day. Before he can go in, he sees his bride come running out of the temple for all she’s worth, throwing an “I’m sorry” over her shoulder. He promptly goes into a blue funk and takes up his … Continue reading

Return with Honor (2007)

This recent addition to the LDS film genre stars Javen Tanner as Rowe McDonald, a young man who has just been released from his mission. He has two goals upon leaving the mission field – the first is to baptize his mother (Tayva Patch) and the second is to marry Ali (Joey Jalalian) the girl of his dreams. She’s been planning the wedding already, so that one’s practically done, but he’s not sure how things are going to go with his mother. On the way home from the airport, the taxi he’s in is hit by a semi-truck. The taxi … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review: October 29th – November 3rd

What’s been going on in LDS this week? If you didn’t have a chance to read regularly, here’s your opportunity to catch up. In “Strengthen the Family,” Miriam mentions the impact General Conference had on her view of motherhood and the need to spend more quality time with her family. Five conference talks were focused on strengthening the family, indicating how very important it is. Tristi continues to discuss the Sunday School class she is taking on family history work in “Sunday School: Temple and Family History Work, Temple Ordinances for the Dead.” We learn about the ordinances that are … Continue reading

LDS Movie Review: “Turn Around”

When I first heard that the movie “Turn Around” had been released, I was pretty excited. Jordan Sorenson, the star, lived in my ward for a while and I wanted to see how he did in the film. He did a good job. I’m sorry to say, he’s the only one who did. The movie is a modern adaptation of the story of Alma the Younger. Sorenson plays Colton Pratt, a young man who was raised in an LDS home but doesn’t believe the things he’s been taught. He’s become angry and bitter, lashing out at his family when they … Continue reading

Considering Pixie Hollow

Of the few women in the Peter Pan story, I always liked Tinker Bell the best. Mrs. Darling had a one-dimensional role and Wendy came across as simple and boring (why would she want to be the mother, of all things, when she’s in the middle of a fairy tale world?). Tiger Lily had a lot of potential and I wouldn’t have minded if we’d followed her adventures on Never Land rather than Peter Pan’s; even as a child I thought she must have gotten up to more than Peter realized, but he, selfishly of course, only thought of her … Continue reading

Getting Ready to Roll This Summer

And so it begins… the countdown to the craziest summer rides around. Today was the official unveiling of a wooden roller coaster dubbed the “Zippin Pippin” at Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin. My 6-year-old is dying to take a spin on the legendary thrill ride, which is considered one of the oldest existing wooden roller coasters in the United States. It was recently transported to northeast Wisconsin and now anchors the family-friendly theme park. We’ll see next week if my daughter is tall enough to make her summer dream come true. In the meantime, there are a … Continue reading

A Personal History of Disney Video Gaming

I’ll admit that next to reading, video gaming is one of my primary hobbies. My love for Disney has always been a part of my video gaming experience. In the early 1990s I had single-game bright plastic colored handheld devices. One, bedecked in perfect princess purples and pinks contained a “Beauty and the Beast” game wherein, as Belle, I had to race to Beast’s castle ahead of Gaston in order to warn the Beast of the advancing mob. My other game, in frankly lurid shades of orange and turquoise, tied in with the Disney afternoon kids show “Rescue Rangers.” Disney’s … Continue reading

Hawaiian Location for Fourth “Pirates” Film

My second and final Hawaii week installment has Disney promising a swashbuckling adventure in Hawaii’s tropical paradise. Executives at Disney have announced that the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will be filmed in Hawaii. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will begin filming this summer on Oahu and Kauai. It’s slated for release in 2011, likely in the summer. Few details are known yet for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” The movie is a confirmed adaptation, in places, of the 1988 historical fantasy novel “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers. The main plot point in the … Continue reading

Not-So-Lyrical Lyrics

I enjoy listening to the radio as I drive around town. I like soft rock and I pride myself on knowing most of the lyrics to most of the songs. I will even confess to singing along with the radio, although I won’t claim to have a great voice. When my kids are in the car, I automatically become more sensitive to the lyrics of the songs. It’s kind of like when you’re watching a movie with your mother. A bed scene or a bit of language takes place and you turn bright red, although it probably wouldn’t have bothered … Continue reading
