The Importance of Grandparent Relationships

My grandparents got home from Australia this week. They have been serving an LDS mission in Brisbane, Australia over the last two years and we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to pick them up from the airport on Monday. Logan was only two when they left. He frequently talked with them on Skype, but that was his only real memory of them up to this point. He warmed up quickly during the ride home, but what impressed me so much was the fact that the moment they walked off the plane my grandmother was already taking advantage of … Continue reading

It’s Up to You

Last week a bill was passed in Utah mandating that schools teach abstinence-only programs and even gives them the option to drop sex education all together; leaving an incredible responsibility on us as parents to educate our children about sex. While this is something we should all be doing already, there are many parents who are so uncomfortable talking to their kids about the subject, that it gets left out all together. They had previously relied on the schools to give their children the education they need on the subject, but they no longer have that luxury. My son is … Continue reading

It’s like living with an entirely different set of people every single day! Kids naturally do go through personality phases. Think for a minute about moms and PMS—that causes some personality changes, right? Kids go through changes as their bodies grow, long before they get to puberty. Sometimes as their brains go through a growth spurt, they’ll act up. Or if their legs are growing. Any time our bodies experience changes, it has an effect … Continue reading

Do You Shield Your Child?

Today is Pearl Harbor Day, the 70th anniversary of a sneak attack that devastated a nation. I’ve studied this event a bit in the past, and it’s pretty gruesome. I want my children to understand facets of history, and yet I worry about giving them too much information before they’re ready for it. This is one of the ways in which parents are uniquely qualified to teach their children—they understand their child’s maturity level and they know what that child can and cannot handle. I have a daughter who can’t hear any bad news on the radio or it distresses … Continue reading
