General Women’s Conference: Sister Thompson’s Address

Continuing our summary of the general women’s conference broadcast which aired last Saturday night, we take a look at Sister Barbara Thompson’s address, entitled, “Now Let Us Rejoice.” This topic was very appropriate for the second counselor in the general Relief Society presidency, herself being an enthusiastic woman. Sister Thompson began her address by stating that Relief Society is evidence of God’s love for His daughters. She reminds us of Joseph Smith’s declaration that “the Church was never perfect until the women were organized.” These early sisters went from home to home, administering to the needs of the families under … Continue reading

In Defense of “Women Who Know”

You all know how much I like to editorialize. I’ve cut back on my editorial proclivities somewhat over the last few months, but every so often, a subject comes up that just raises those ol’ hackles and I feel the strongest urge to speak out and make a nuisance of myself. That’s exactly what I’m about to do right now. Sister Julie B. Beck, over the course of the General Women’s Conference and then the Sunday session of General Conference, gave two of the most beautiful talks I’ve ever heard given by a General Relief Society President. Miriam will provide … Continue reading

Self-defense Parties

Have you heard about the newest craze in teen parties? Self-defense or personal protection parties are fast becoming popular among the teen set, for those wishing to learn how to protect themselves against an aggressor. Geared mainly for females, participants are taught self-defense in the comfort of their own homes. Partygoers are taught how to kick, punch and use their voices as weapons. The Girl Scouts are also helping young women learn about self-defense in a program called P.A.V.E. the Way (Project Anti-Violence Education). This nationwide program addresses violence and violence-prevention. It focuses on important issues including bullying, Internet safety … Continue reading

An Aggressive Form Of Breast Cancer You NEED To Know About

Last month was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and while I concentrated on making you aware of the various retailers helping to combat the disease, I neglected to provide much information on the most aggressive form of breast cancer–many women have never heard of it. My mother is a breast cancer survivor. Two years ago she was diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer and underwent a series of treatments. Today she is still not 100%, but is on the road to recovery. Prior to her diagnosis I was aware of the disease (moderately), but knew nothing of the most aggressive form of … Continue reading

What if O.J. Didn’t Do It?

Surely you remember the ‘90s circus that was the O.J. Simpson murder trial. The infamous white Bronco freeway chase that lasted an hour and a half and was watched by most of America. The glove and Johnnie Cockran’s famous “if it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” statement. The racist remarks made by LAPD officer Mark Fuhrmann. The acquittal followed by the guilty verdict in the civil suit of the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Then, the book that Simpson wrote titled “If I Did It.” What gall, what arrogance…what…if he didn’t do it? (This image is a … Continue reading

Oh No They Didn’t!

I am a big fan of memorials. I was a bit put out when the London Olympics didn’t have a moment of silence to honor the Israeli athletes that were murdered during the Munich games 40 years ago. Every September 11th, I try to watch a documentary – one of the gut wrenching ones – so I will remember the pain I felt that day and to pray for the victims and those they left behind. So needless to say, I was appalled today when I read that “The Today Show” chose to speak with Kris Jenner at 8:46 am … Continue reading

Animal Abuse Registry

Back when I was a teenager and hadn’t yet learned to stop watching pet cops shows for the sake of my stress levels, I remember learning an interesting, if obvious, fact. People who abuse (and this is direct physical abuse, not criminal neglect) their animals are much more likely to become violent against others, especially their family members. Now a county in New York State is taking that information to its next logical conclusion: Suffolk County, NY is launching a pet abuser registry. According to MSNBC, the purpose of the registry is to create a list of potential family abusers; … Continue reading

Married to My Best Friend

Are you friends with your spouse? I don’t mean, do you like each other in addition to being in love, although that’s a very good thing to. I mean, can you really sit down and have a long conversation with your spouse and come away from it feeling as though you’ve just had a really good talk with a friend? I am so lucky in that I’m married to my best friend. It’s not something that happened immediately—when we were first married, I sure did like him a lot, but I still had my social circle and my girlfriends and … Continue reading
