Mormons and Genealogy

One question that many new genealogists have, after seeing that many great genealogy resources are connected with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is why genealogy is so important to Mormons. For Mormons, family life is important, eternal, in fact, and it is central to God’s plan. Since family is an eternal structure, baptisms may be conducted for deceased family members. Genealogy research enters the picture when Mormons trace their roots in search of ancestors who died without learning about the Mormon Gospel. It is these ancestors who are then baptized by proxy in the temple, so … Continue reading

Mormons and Politics

I have to admit that on this election day, I could hardly think of anything to write about that did not directly relate to politics. While the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints maintains political neutrality, politics are still a very hot topic among LDS members. And, I have to say that I have been ashamed by some of the comments I have seen by LDS members of the church opposing other parties. Politics and Religion are two things that do not go hand in hand very easily. However, I have felt that during this election year, I have … Continue reading

Sharing the Gospel Can Be Simple

I know that I have a few mormon friends who are worried about making friends with non-LDS people because they are afraid that they will have nothing in common with them. I find that to be not true in my own experience. However, when you branch out, and become friends with someone who is not mormon, you will most likely find yourself answering questions about your faith. That is simply because we are different, and we stand out. Hopefully, for the right reasons. The truth is, that as Elder Holland said recently, we can never check our religion at the … Continue reading

A Primary Basic: You Are Special

The primary lesson that is coming up for week 4 seemed a little lackluster to me. It is about respect others, which boils down to one of the ten commandments, “Love thy Neighbor”. I wasn’t a big fan of what the outline suggested, but it did trigger in my mind a way that I could present the simple lesson to the children that everyone is a child of God. I chose the book, You Are Special by Max Lucado. He is not an LDS writer of children’s books, but a great one with inspiring lessons. I love this book because … Continue reading

Your Typical American Mormon Family

So, I was watching the Today show this morning and there was a lot of focus on Mitt Romney and the Republican Convention. Big surprise there, I know. The story also included the subject of MItt Romney’s faith because apparently he is going to speak about it in his speech tomorrow night. So, once again, Mormonism is in the spotlight. But, one thing that surprised me was that they said that most people don’t know a lot about our faith. And, I thought, really? Sure, maybe you don’t know a lot about specific theology, like the fact that we do … Continue reading

Primary Bulletin Board

This year, the theme in primary is Choose The Right. It’s been a great theme to talk to my kids at home about too. Even my 3 year old will say to me when he is reprimanded for doing something wrong, “Mommy, that’s not choosing the right!”. It’s an easy concept to teach to children, so I’m glad it is our theme for 2012. Part of my calling that I have to admit I haven’t been too great at, is decorating our ward bulletin board. However, this year, we have another ward that is in our building with us that … Continue reading

What I Believe-The Bible and The Book of Mormon

Many times, it is unfairly stated that Mormons do not believe in the Bible. How wrong that is! We do believe in the Bible. We use the King James Version of the Bible because we believe it is the version that is translated most accurately. We believe it was written by prophets of God and we believe in both the Old and New Testaments. We use them regularly in our church services, and we are encouraged to read the Bible regularly. We also believe that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. We do not look at the … Continue reading

A Mormon for President?

Well, now that Mitt Romney has announced his official run for the republican nomination for president, there are going to be a lot of questions about Mormons and about whether or not a Mormon for president is a good idea. Is it? Well, I say, why not. But, that doesn’t mean I’m jumping on the political bandwagon just yet. Many Mormons will vote for Romney for the simple fact that he is an active, practicing Mormon. And, while that does comfort me to a point, it is not all that I will consider when choosing who to vote for. After … Continue reading

Time Out for Women

Have you ever had the strong desire to just get an extra spiritual boost outside of your usual personal study and church meetings? Have you been longing for a girls’ weekend getaway? Well, Time Out for Women might just be your answer. A few years ago, a couple of my friends asked me if I was interested in going. This was when I lived in GA, and the closest one was going to be 4 hours away. We all thought it would be a fun chance to leave the kids behind, stay in a hotel, and make the most of … Continue reading

Poking Fun of Mormons

I just don’t get it. I don’t understand the need others feel to make fun of other religions. Sure, the joke now and then is one thing, but creating entire musicals, shows, books around trying to make fun of another religion seems like a waste of time. Unfortunately, I’m a member of a religion that gets made fun of…a lot. Recently, there was an article written in the Washington Post titled, “Why I won’t be seeing the Book of Mormon Musical“. He makes some fabulous points. I couldn’t have said it better myself. But, here is what I don’t get. … Continue reading
