Singing Sisters Battle Cystic Fibrosis and Inspire Millions

I’m not one for watching reality television. I remember the first season of The Real World and that’s about it. I don’t like watching people make fools of themselves and dislike even more, the insulting and heartbreaking comments that spew out of judges on competition shows like American Idol. This year was different for me though. While I didn’t watch the opening rounds of America’s Got Talent, I did tune in when I heard about Christina and Ali, two sisters who were competing on the show and who both battle cystic fibrosis. My daughter has cystic fibrosis, so the issue … Continue reading

Is there a Kris Allen Scandal Brewing?

If you watched the season finale of “American Idol,” you may have been shocked that low keyed, humble Kris Allen beat Adam Lambert, the obvious forerunner since – well, about the first day on the big stage. Oddly enough, Kris Allen was surprised when Kris Allen was named the newest American Idol. Now, the New York Times thinks Allen had a little extra help from AT&T in winning the title. Some fans in Arkansas could use their mobile phones to cast blocks of votes for Allen. However, AT&T didn’t provide the same option for Lambert’s fans. Maybe AT&T thought he … Continue reading

Reviewing Your Patriarchal Blessing

When you first get your patriarchal blessing, you may pour over it reading every word, and pondering what your future holds in store for you. You may have recorded your initial feelings and reactions in your journal, And then you tuck it safely away and may forget to come back to review it for a while. I like to review my patriarchal blessing every few months. It is a great way to take stock of where I am, and where I want to be. It really gives me the opportunity to reflect on my life and on what my Heavenly … Continue reading

What does American Idol and Homeschooling have in Common?

What does American Idol and Homeschooling have in Common? David Archuletta: 2008 American Idol runner up is officially a student at Murray Highschool in Murray Utah. On the Idol set, he had the obligatory (and by law) three hour a day tutoring that working minors must get. In a recent article in the DesertNews website, he stated, “I’ve probably home-schooled for half of my life, so it’s not anything new to me. If … I have to do that, (homeschool) then that’s something I’m up for.” He has been “working” and has been on numerous TV shows since the age … Continue reading

American Idol

“American Idol” fever has swept the nation and I got swept right along with it. From the moment it hit the American airwaves seven seasons ago, it’s been the talk of the break room, the water cooler, and the hair salon. So, just what is all the hype about? We start by seeing the auditions. The three judges—Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson—travel to different cities across the nation and audition local talent. These hopefuls first pass by preliminary judges who either wave them through or send them on their way. They are then sent one at a time … Continue reading

I’ll Never Win American Idol

I’ll never win American Idol, or Dancing with the Stars. I can’t twirl a fire baton, tap dance or ballet dance, for that matter. You’ll never see me on America’s Got Talent, the Miss America pageant, or any other stage performing any other sort of stage-type talent. I just don’t have any. In fact, many of us don’t. And many of us feel that because of this, we aren’t talented. We beat ourselves up, wondering why were weren’t one of the chosen. We sit in sacrament meeting, listening to Sister Jones warble out a beautiful hymn with her perfect contralto, … Continue reading

Pink and Carey Separate and Idol News

How many times have Michele and I started a blog with “Well, they said it wouldn’t last…and it didn’t!” This time, I am talking about motocross racer Carey Hart and his soon to be ex-wife Pink. The couple has decided to end their union after a mere two years. The singer and the racer met at the 2001 X Games in Las Vegas. She proposed to him four years later while the couple was at a race in Mammoth Lakes, California. A January 7, 2006 wedding followed in Costa Rica. But, now the good times are over. Today, Pink’s rep … Continue reading

American Idol Winner Cancels Summer Tour

If you are a fan of the Season One “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson, you may be disappointed to hear that she has cancelled her summer tour dates, reportedly due to poor ticket sales. This news comes just days after Clarkson announced that she was splitting from her manager, Jeff Kwatinetz of The Firm management group. On her official web site, Kelly said, “In the craziness of the music business, performing is what I look forward to doing the most, so it really is disappointing for me to have to tell you that I won’t be coming out to tour … Continue reading

Has American Idol Gone Too Far?

I must admit that I only became hooked on American Idol last year. And then that was only because I had someone ask me to blog about it. I had never understood the fascination with the show. I didn’t even start watching last year until they were almost finished with Hollywood. But, I must admit, once I started watching, I was caught up in it. By the end of the season, I was calling in constantly, voting for Taylor. I could not wait until this season started. Apparently, I was not the only one. There were 37.3 million other people … Continue reading

Summer Reading Series: Penny and Her Song

You won’t be seeing my daughter on American Idol any time soon. Make that, ever. My 7-year-old possesses a litany of incredible talents; however, singing is not one of them. I know. I know. How dare I make such a stinging comment about my own flesh and blood. Calm down. It’s called reality. And it doesn’t mean that I don’t allow her to exercise her vocal chords. Nor does it mean that I cringe whenever she feels the urge to make like Miley Cyrus or the kids on Curious George. Rather, I am simply not a parent who is disillusioned … Continue reading
