Have You Ever Kept A Scripture Journal?

These days it seems like we are living in a digital world. I have the scriptures on my IPod that I can easily pull out and read. In church, I frequently see people using their smart devices to read their scriptures in class. My primary chorister even uses her IPad to lead the music each week. While technology is a beautiful tool, I wonder about its effects on my own scripture study. No longer do we use red pencils to read our scriptures. And, are the days gone where your children might catch you reading your scriptures and be inspired … Continue reading

Helping Children Get Started With Scrapbooking

Although scrapbooking is a hobby seen mostly with adults, many children and teenagers enjoy creating their own unique books. I have always tried to set aside photographs that I want to keep but might not incorporate into a scrapbook, or I always made sure I had doubles on hand. These were pictures that my children could use to create their own special scrapbooks. Don’t think that it’s just girls who will enjoy this activity. When my children were younger, they put together an entire book of their own. My son was in the 3rd grade at the time. Most children, … Continue reading

Your Child’s Art Stories

I admit that I am not a scrap booker. I take a lot of photos but then don’t do anything official with them, other than sharing a few on our family website or Facebook. Although I got several baby books with my first child, I managed to make just one single entry, the day that my son rolled over for the first time. Still, I do like to collect my children’s artwork for posterity. I keep the very best pieces of art and donate the rest to the in-laws, because how could I possibly toss anything out that a child … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

Scripture Journals

One of my best friends has encouraged me for years to keep a spiritual journal. She urged that I make note of spiritual promptings and blessings. This is a little different from your regular journal in that it is solely comprised of things of the spirit, rather than including the more mundane items on the list. The theory is that, when you are feeling down, you can go to your spiritual journal and be reminded of the many ways Heavenly Father has had a hand in your life. While the big things – prayers about whether or not to marry … Continue reading

Children’s Journals

After Miriam’s great blog entry on journal writing, I’d like to take the next step and challenge everyone to encourage their children’s self-expression. Think your kids are too young? Hence the challenge! Last summer, while my kids were 5, 3 and a half, and 18 months, I decided that my older two were ready to create a journal of their very own. My daughter had just started reading and writing, and both kids love to color. Since I also homeschool, I thought a journal would not only be an excellent way to teach the kids young to follow the counsel … Continue reading

Primary Time: Challenge Your Child to Have Personal Scripture Study

At what age do you begin to encourage your children to complete personal scripture study on their own? The answer may vary according to the child, but I recommend that you encourage this as soon as your child is able to read on his own. You may want to have your child start by reading the easy versions published by the church, but I would not encourage this for long. Your child may become dependent on the readers. Personally, I began personal scripture study when I was eight years old. I was challenged by my stake president to read the … Continue reading

Helping Your Children Keep a Journal

Keeping a journal is a wonderful experience for everyone. It can give you the chance to reflect on the problems that we are currently facing. It also helps us to remember the small moments in our lives. It is just as important that we give our children a chance to keep a journal as well. There are some easy ways to help your young and older children keep a journal. 1) The first thing you should do is to buy your child a journal. Ask him to pick it out. Some people prefer three ring binders, others would like a … Continue reading

Living with Dogs Might Improve Baby Health

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a real reason to keep our dogs around our babies? Some people are terrified of the idea, thinking that it’s dangerous to let dogs around small children. At first it’s best never to leave dogs alone with babies, to make sure the animals know to be gentle around them. However, we pet owners know that some dogs are great with babies. There have already been some studies about how being around dogs in the first year of infancy can help reduce the chances of a child later developing allergies to dogs, but what about … Continue reading
