Frugal Guide to Helping Others in Need

Helping others in need is a difficult concept when you you count your pennies yourself. It is especially difficult when you know that the person in need of help is quite wasteful with money normally. You will feel it is their fault for ending up in dire straits and not want to help at all. Still, if they have children, or medical issues, your heart-strings will beg you to help. Here are some things you can do to help without compromising your ideals, or harming your own budget. 1. Cut coupons and get free coupons online: A person who is … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

When You Want To Hit A Bully

I recently read a post to an article that Kori Rodley-Irons wrote titled “What if You Don’t Like Your Child’s Friend?” and I wanted to respond to it. Katie-Anne wrote “I’d like to see an article that advises us moms on what to do when you want to go slap one of your kid’s classmates because they were mean to your child and he’s cried himself to sleep for a week as a result! ROFL I can’t be the only mom to have these completely irrational thoughts am I?” No Katie-Anne you are not the only mom who has had … Continue reading

Taking Care of Your Support System

As a single parent it’s hard to ask for help. We want to be able to take care of everything ourselves and we don’t want to be a bother to other people. Sometimes we need help, there’s no way around it. You get stuck in a meeting at work and can’t pick your child up from school or daycare and have to call someone to ask for help. Do you have people you can go to in a situation like that? It’s always best to have a safety net in place, even if you never need it. You should have … Continue reading

Should You Do Business with Your Friends?

We all know a guy who can get us a good deal on something. And if we don’t, Johnny at work has a cousin whose friend can get us a good deal. In today’s world, sometimes it’s all about who you know. You can get a better job if you do a little name-dropping, call in a few favors. You might get a discount if you play your cards right. And come on – who doesn’t want a good deal? Who would turn down an opportunity to save some cash? But there are times when it’s not wise to enter … Continue reading

Believer Married to Non Believer- Part 2

Today I’m continuing with more tips about dealing with an unbelieving spouse when you are a believer.Instead of preaching at them, a better way is given in 1 Peter 3:1-4. Don’t talk about what you believe, but instead show it by the way you live. Let your love and actions speak to them and trust God to be at work changing their heart and attitudes. Remember God wants what is best for you and your spouse. Remember too, that it is God’s work to change your spouse’s attitude and heart, not yours. Hard as it may be to accept, remember … Continue reading

Mary, Martha, and Betty Sue

We read in the Bible about two sisters named Mary and Martha, and their brother, Lazarus. The members of this family were close personal friends of our Savior’s and He came to visit them whenever he was in Bethany. On one memorable visit, Mary sat at His feet while He taught the principles of everlasting life. Martha was busy in the kitchen, preparing the evening meal, and felt as though Mary should be helping her. When Martha spoke to Christ about this, we all remember His response, that Mary had chosen the better part. Women of the Church have thought … Continue reading

Dr. Phil Cancels Britney Intervention Show

So much for that televised Britney Spears intervention Dr. Phil had hoped would make him as famous as his boss Oprah. According to his website, Dr. Phil McGraw has officially canceled plans to devote an entire show to Britney Spears’ “difficulties.” The good doc calls the situation surrounding his meeting with the derailed pop star and the subsequent show “too intense.” Aw, gee, ya think sending out press releases, blanketing the airwaves with ads for your upcoming show, then showing up on “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Insider,” and CBS’s “The Early Show” bragging about your “relationship” with the Spears family and … Continue reading

The Stress and Strain of Last-Minute Requests

I wrote yesterday about what a relief it can be as a single parent to get to a place where you’ve built up some practical reserves and are not just flying by the seat of your pants. However, since most of us are on extremely snug budgets, it might not take much to put a strain on all of our best-laid plans. In my world, my kids can be the biggest culprits for those last-minute requests. Despite the fact that I have tried to hammer into my kids’ heads that budgeting is key in our family and that if they … Continue reading
