The Best Tradition of Christmas: Being Together

Christmas traditions in my family have changed over the years. When the kids were little, we always opened gifts on Christmas Eve. Now they receive money ahead of time and get to spend it however they wish. My youngest spends it as soon as it touches his fingers, my daughter waits until she can get to the mall and my oldest holds onto it for a while. Another tradition we had when they were younger was to read stories like “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Now we play games like Uno, Apples to Apples or Catch Phrase. We used to … Continue reading

Christmas Shopping for the Other Woman in Your Child’s Life

What do you get for the person your child spends more waking time with on a daily basis than anyone else on the planet? I’m not referring to your spouse, parent or iCarly. Rather, if your son or daughter is old enough to hit the books, then you are probably racking your brain right now to figure out what to get his teacher for Christmas. I know because I’m struggling too. Finding a material good that expresses your appreciation for the woman (or man), who spends upwards of eight hours a day with your kid, five days a week, can … Continue reading

The Ward Christmas Party-Evolution of an Idea

So, I met with our bishopric this week to discuss our ward Christmas party this year. It is starting to take a little shape. I’m still excited about the idea, but it is a lot of work too! This is what we have planned for sure. We will start with a sit down dinner first. We have lots of elderly people in our ward, so we thought it would be nice to have servers at the dinner. This will most likely be our youth. We will pre-assemble the plates and pass those out so that people can sit and listen … Continue reading

Christmas Fireside Suggestions

A wonderful fireside to have during the Christmas season is one that focuses on Christmas music. This is an easy fireside to set up and it welcomes in the spirit so easily. These ideas can also be adapted to work as a sacrament meeting to celebrate Christmas. You can have a formal fireside with one or two speakers and musical numbers planned. You may have the choir sing, and then contact other groups to have them perform as well. This is a great fireside that can involve many people in your ward. It is also a great time to invite … Continue reading

Creating New Christmas Traditions

When you are first married, you may find yourself pulled here and there juggling between two different families, but when your kids become a bit older, it is a good idea to carve out your own family traditions. There are a variety of things you can do over the holidays to create memories that will last forever. Christmas caroling is one tradition that seems to have fallen out of style lately, but it is a great way to spread the holiday cheer. You can carol in your neighborhood, in your ward, or at a hospital or nursing home. You can … Continue reading

LDS Christmas Gift Ideas for Kids

If you are looking for a great Christmas gift for your child or grandchild, but would love to stick to an LDS theme, there are several great gifts available. These gifts may be great as a secondary gift to another more traditional Christmas gift. These also make great contributions to a Sunday toy box or a quiet time activity during Sacrament meeting. One great gift is the Brick of Mormon book to your children. This is a fun book that includes photographs of the different stories made out of Legos. Each of the pictures has a synopsis of the scripture … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – December 10th – 15th

If you missed some of the blogs here in LDS over the last week, come check out the week in review and get caught up. In “Shepherds of the Flock,” we read Spencer W. Kimball’s lesson on how we need to support our leaders and serve willingly in the Church. Wondering how to submit your genealogical information, now that it’s been gathered? Read “Using TempleReady” to discover the next step. If you need ideas for meaningful Christmas gifts, you might consider giving food storage. “December Preparedness Goals” gives you more information on this, as well as other ideas to put … Continue reading

The Power of Christmas Music

We’ve been taught about the power of hymns to bring us closer to the Savior. As I’ve been driving around town running my errands the last few days, I’ve also found that certain Christmas music also has that power – the car is one of the only places where I’m really able to listen to music and hear the lyrics. I’d like to share with you a couple of my favorite Christmas songs and explain just why they impact me so greatly. The first is “O, Holy Night.” I have loved this hymn for as long as I can remember. … Continue reading

Young Women: Christmas and Personal Progress

The holidays are coming up. You can easily plan activities that fit in with the young women’s Personal Progress and Christmas. Here are four uplifting activities that will help with Personal Progress and focus on the true meaning of Christmas. 1) You can have a night in which you view artwork that depicts the Nativity and life of Christ. As you view the artwork, you may also want to read scriptures that pertain to parts of Christ’s life. You may also listen or sing along to Handel’s Messiah. At the end of the activity you may want to leave a … Continue reading

Commercialism and Christmas: You Set the Tone

This time of year, we are always presented with a dilemma: how do we celebrate Christmas without getting too caught up the commercialism? Many great blogs have been posted on this very topic here on Families.com, and I link to some of them below, but I couldn’t let the season go past without putting in my two cents. You know I’m not known for being quiet. In my community, I’ve heard commercialism spoken of like some looming monster that we can’t avoid. Often the comments sound helpless, as though we are forced to partake of all the heathen traditions and … Continue reading
