Gospel Doctrine: What is Eternal Life?

This week’s Sunday School lesson is entitled “And This is Life Eternal.” This title comes from John 17:3, which states that life eternal is “that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” We are told in Moses that the work and glory of God is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” But what is the difference in the two? What, exactly, is eternal life? A book I have recently read on scripture study advises that you take note of “God’s definitions.” Throughout the scriptures, the Lord tells … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Rich Young Man

The story of the rich young man, as found in Mark 10:17-30, is one that is fairly well known. The youth asks the Savior how he might obtain eternal life. When told to give up his riches, he declines and leaves the Savior. Often, we focus on the negatives of the story, but today, I’d like to point out a few positive aspects that might be missed. The first thing that struck my eye was the eagerness the youth had when it came to Jesus. If you look at verse 17, you read “there came one running.” This young man … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Focusing on Christ

When Peter, James, and John were taken to the Mount of Transfiguration with the Savior, I found their response interesting. Only a week after he had testified of the divinity of Christ, Peter seemed to put Him on equal footing with the resurrected prophets. How could a senior disciple make such a grievous error? Perhaps because he was, like the rest of us, only human. Only one chapter prior, Peter had declared Christ to be the Son of God. Why, then, would he suggest an alter be built to worship the Savior, Moses, and Elijah? Shouldn’t he recognize that Christ … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Wandering Through the World

As disciples of Christ, we must seek to put Him and His kingdom first. This becomes clear as we study Matthew 6:22-23 and 7:13-14. In the first section, we are told to keep our eye single to the glory of God, and in the section we are reminded of the narrow gate and the strait path we must follow to return to His presence. It becomes clear as we study these four verses that the presence of God is not something we can just “wander” into. First, let’s look at the verses in chapter 6. Make sure you take note … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week In Review: February 25th – March 3rd

We have certainly had a prolific week here at the LDS Family Blog! The blogs have ranged in subject, covering nearly every aspect of the gospel. Let’s take a stroll through just a few of them. Gospel Doctrine (Sunday School) In Pride and Charity, we discussed how we need to be certain that we weren’t doing good works to attract worldly attention. In Divine Communication, we discussed how we can use sincere and heartfelt prayer to draw closer to our Heavenly Father. In Receiving What We Give, we were reminded that as we sow, so shall we reap, whether it … Continue reading
