Gospel Questions: What Do Mormons Believe about Death?

Death is a sorrow that will come to all of us. We lose our grandparents, our parents, sometimes a child. We may lose a spouse before we are ready to let them go. The human body is frail and can only remain with us for a short time. It’s hard to let go of someone we loved so dearly. However, there is hope and peace that comes through knowing and understanding the principle of life after death. We believe that when a person dies, they do not cease to exist, but that their spirit rises up to dwell with Heavenly … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Witnesses of the Resurrected Lord

Various witnesses who saw Jesus in His resurrected state. First among them were Mary Magdalene and other women who had come to the tomb to anoint His body for burial. Next were the Apostles of Christ. Their testimonies teach us of Christ, and we, in turn, bear our testimonies to teach others. In the beginning of the first three chapters we read for class this week – Matthew 28, Luke 24, and John 20 – we learn that several women ventured to the tomb to prepare Christ’s body. There, the find not their deceased friend Jesus, but two angels who … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Christ’s ‘Straightway’ and ‘Immediately’

Most of us are familiar with the story found in John 6:15-21 and Matthew 14:22-33. However, as I studied these verses, I was impressed by how quickly the Savior responded in several instances. In this portion of the lesson, the Savior sends the Twelve on a boat alone while he disperses the multitude that sought after them. He then goes up to a mountain to pray and commune with the Lord. While the disciples were on the ship, a storm came up, and they were afraid. In the fourth watch – between three and six in the morning, according to … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “Great Is Thy Faith”

The focus of this week’s lesson is on the receipt of the keys of the kingdom; as usual, the scriptures contain so many more lessons to be observed. As I started reading Lesson 13 today, I was touched by the faith of the Canaanite woman who pleaded with the Savior to heal her daughter. (Matthew 15:21-28) The story initially appears to be your typical “Master, please heal” one, as found throughout the scriptures. However, when you take a second look, you realize that this Canaanite woman was not an Israelite; she was a Gentile. Thus, when she asked the Lord … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Bowed and Infirm

As we study Luke 13:10-17 for lesson 10 this week, we find ourselves again looking at the Sabbath day. This time, the Savior has healed a woman on the Sabbath, and received criticism from the ruler of the synagogue. Since yesterday we looked at the idea of keeping the Sabbath, I would like to turn our attention today towards the crippled woman herself. The woman in the synagogue was “bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.” I wonder sometimes about us. Aren’t there days when you feel bowed down and crushed under by the weight of your … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Peace, Be Still

I think what I love the most about the way the Lord works is how my scripture study always seems to match up so neatly with my life – or else, my life matches so well to my scripture study. Last night, discussing the Relief Society/Priesthood lesson, I spoke of my determination to spend today vigilantly overcoming a bad habit. After studying today’s portion of the Sunday School lesson, Mark 4:35-41, I felt further strengthened and uplifted. This short portion covered the well-known story of Christ stilling the tempest. In fact, as I read it to my children (trying to … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Daniel and the King

This week’s lesson covers both Daniel and Esther. I’d like to take a few minutes to focus on the first six chapters of Daniel and one of the lessons that caught my attention. As I began reading a few chapters, I confess that I began to wonder about this king Nebuchadnezzar. After hearing Daniel explain his visions and seeing Shadrach (Hananiah), Meshach (Mishael), Abed-nego (Azariah) thrown into the fiery furnace, how, I wondered, could he throw Daniel into the lion’s den? The answer, I am embarrassed to admit, is in the scriptures. King Nebuchadnezzar did not throw Daniel in the … Continue reading

Seeking Revelation

There are times in each of our lives, when we must make choices regarding our future. There are times when we are seeking guidance to help us solve a problem that we are facing. We may be looking for a reason for our suffering or simply seeking comfort as we work through our trials. We are able to seek personal revelation through prayer with our Heavenly Father. It is important to realize that prayer is a two way communication, and that as we receive answers, we need to be prepared to act on those answers. We also need to give … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 7

This week’s dinner discussions are based on lesson seven from the manuals. You may need to adjust your lesson according to your ward’s schedule. It is important to keep the dinner discussions positive so that your children will listen and learn. It is a great time to reinforce gospel principles. If you have a child that is in Nursery or Sunbeams, he learned about the Holy Ghost. The children learned that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead and that he does not have a physical body. They also learned that the Holy Ghost can help them … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Work of Repentance

If you haven’t guessed by now, my Relief Society blogs (as well as my Gospel Doctrine ones) mirror my daily scripture study. Studying President Kimball’s lesson on the miracle of forgiveness, I found the sections covered tonight strongly related to a problem I had struggled with only a few minutes before. While I am guilty of no major, confession-requiring, temple-preventing sins, I have several nasty little habits that I know I need to change. I suppose we all do. I also carry a strong sense of responsibility as to what I teach my children. This particular habit, which I have … Continue reading
