Gospel Doctrine: Prepare His Ways and Make His Paths Straight

The sometimes not-so-good thing about detailed scripture study is that you very rarely make it very far very fast. Today, after a good half hour of study, I finished the first three verses of Matthew 3, which make up part of next week’s lesson. The good thing, of course, is that I wound up pondering those three verses in full, and of course, part of that pondering included researching the scriptures given in the footnote. The surface of the verses seems very simplistic; John the Baptist began his mortal ministry, preaching that we must “Repent..: for the kingdom of Heaven … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: A Just Man

When we studied Luke as we prepared for this Sunday’s lesson, we considered the character of Mary, the mother of Christ. The first chapter of Matthew centers more clearly around the earthly father of Jesus, a man named Joseph. Over half of Matthew 1 relates the genealogy of Joseph. Elder James E. Talmage taught that, “Had Judah been a free and independent nation, ruled by her rightful sovereign, Joseph the carpenter would have been her crowned king; and his lawful successor to the throne would have been Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” (Jesus the Christ, p. 87) This … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine & Relief Society Week in Review: January 7-13

Well, it’s Saturday, and every Latter-day Saint knows (or should know) that “Saturday is a special day, it’s the day we get ready for Sunday” (Children’s Songbook, pg 196). Part of getting ready for Sunday means finishing up your reading of the Sunday school and Relief Society/Elder’s Quorum lesson. If you’ve been following the LDS families blog throughout the week, you’ve been able to read each segment of the two lessons as they have been published. However, for those who are running a bit behind – or who procrastinated their lesson study until this week, I’d like to provide you … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: A Pure and Chosen Vessel

Although last month seems like an ideal time to discuss the conception of Christ and the Lord’s choice of mothers, I’m going to buck the trend and do it in January. Of course, the Sunday School lesson for this week is a big part of the cause of the subject. Still, I’ve always been a rebel, so why not continue to go against the grain? We’ve discussed Elisabeth and the divine announcement of her pregnancy with John the Baptist. Shortly after, Gabriel, the same angel who visited Zacharias, came to Mary. While I studied the passages on Elisabeth, several questions … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Because Thou Believest Not My Words

Did you ever notice that sometimes you get hit in the head with a particular principle or teaching over and over again? That seems to be happening to me this week. Today, as I continued preparing for next week’s Sunday School lesson, I studied Luke 1:18-25. I was particularly impressed Zacharias questioned the angel who came to tell him that he and his wife would have a child. Let’s take a quick look at the circumstances which surrounded this announcement. Zacharias had been called to serve in the temple. As a descendent of Aaron, he passed that same priesthood on … Continue reading
