But If Not

Have you read the talk by Elder Dennis E. Simmons of the Seventy titled, But if Not? I was prompted to go look it up and read it after our lesson in Gospel Doctrine a couple of Sundays ago. It is a great talk, and I highly recommend reading it. The Old Testament is not my favorite. But, through studying it this year, I’ve learned some valuable lessons from those prophets of old. We talked about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. I was very sleepy during the lesson, and had a hard time listening (I know everyone has those days), but … Continue reading

Who’s Who in the Book of Mormon – Brad Ballard

I always get excited when I discover an LDS-themed children’s picture book that I can enjoy with my children, that teaches important gospel principles and yet is presented in a way they find entertaining. I was so pleased to learn about “Who’s Who in the Book of Mormon” by new author/illustrator Brad Ballard. As we open the book, we first note the cute illustrations. They aren’t elaborate, but they’re effective and well-done. I especially liked the sheep, which look like kernels of popcorn with legs. Each page contains a full-length flap which is folded out to reveal more of the … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2008 Week 8

This week’s dinner discussions are based on lesson eight in the manual. You may need to make adjustments according to your ward’s schedule. You may also want to prepare your children to listen to General Conference this month. Additionally Easter Sunday is this month, and you may want to spend extra time discussing the true meaning of Easter. If you have a child in Sunbeams or Nursery he learned about night and day. The lesson covered the creation and talked about the difference between day and night. It also talked about how Heavenly Father announced the birth of Jesus to … Continue reading

Sunday School Classes

Generally when you attend Sunday school as an adult you will attend the Gospel Doctrine class. This class studies the scriptures in depth over the course of the year and rotates through the different volumes of scripture each year. However, you may be asked or have the opportunity to attend a different Sunday school class that your ward is offering. One class that you may be asked to attend is Gospel Principles. This class is designed for new members or for members that are returning to activity. It talks about specific principles of the gospel in depth. The scriptures are … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Things I Saw While I Was Carried Away in the Spirit

Our Gospel Doctrine lesson for last week focused on chapters 12-14 of the Book of Mormon, which is the record of the vision Nephi had when he inquired of the Lord to know the meaning of his father’s dream. Chapter twelve specifically deals with the symbolism found in the vision of the Tree of Life, which we know is an allegory of the importance of holding on to the word of God and coming unto Christ, ignoring the pressures of the world and the temptations that swirl up to pull us off the path. In chapter thirteen, we see that … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review: January 21st-January 26th

In case you missed any of the blogs here in LDS, here is a recap so you can stay on top of things. In “The Importance of Families,” Tristi shares an amusing story about her three-year-old and relates it to the knowledge each of us has, deep down, that our family is important. She also begins the new year’s course of study for Gospel Doctrine with “The Keystone of Our Religion,” which is the Book of Mormon. Miriam shares with us her ideas for how to have “Effective Family Home Evenings,” and talks with us about the blessings that will … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: All Things According to His Will

The second lesson in our Gospel Doctrine course this year is called “All Things According to His Will” and focuses on Lehi’s departure, with his family, into the wilderness. Our recommended reading is: 1 Nephi 1:4-15, 18-20, 2:1-3: What circumstances led to Lehi’s departure into the wilderness? 1 Nephi 1:19-20, 2:12-13, 16:1-2, also 1 Nephi 2:16, 19: Why were the people so reluctant to hear the words of Lehi and the other prophets who had been sent to teach repentance to them? Why are people so filled with pride that when they are called upon to repent, they become angry … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 10:1-10

Lehi has related his dream of the tree of life to his family, and Nephi has taken a moment to explain that these plates are those upon which he is enscribing the more spiritual things and that the other plates he is keeping will be for the more political things of his people. 1. And now I, Nephi, proceed to give an account upon these plates of my proceedings, and my reign and ministry; wherefore, to proceed with mine account, I must speak somewhat of the things of my father, and also of my brethren. 2. For behold, it came … Continue reading

Organized Religion

Sometimes we hear a person say, “I don’t agree with organized religion. I think God is best worshipped in a free, unrestrained way.” I’ve been talking this over with various people, and my mom put it best when she said, “God is organized. Of course His church would be the most organized church on the planet.” This is so true. Look at the very laws of physics and science. All perfectly organized, A leading to B which leads to C. Look at the planets in the heavens, how they spin around each in their orbit, never bumping into each other. … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 32

This week’s dinner discussions are based on lesson thirty two for those in Senior Primary and older. Junior Primary and Sunbeams learned about lesson thirty one. Remember the importance of keeping the conversation upbeat and positive. You may need to adjust according to your ward’s schedule. If you have a child in Sunbeams he learned about being grateful for his home. The lesson talked about Lehi and his family traveling to the Promised Land. It also talked about pioneers traveling to Salt Lake. You may want to talk about the nice things about having a home. You can also discuss … Continue reading
