Creating A Learning-Centered Home

The primary responsibility for teaching our children lays not on the church and not on the schools but in our own homes. It is our role as parents to teach our children about the gospel and about our Savior. As I studied the section in the Teacher Development manual on creating a learning atmosphere, I saw a multitude of ways that we could apply these precepts not only in our wards and branches but in our homes. Because there were so many fantastic points, I’m going to break this down into a series over the remainder of the week. Today, … Continue reading

Where’s Your Family’s Focus?

The family is the central unit to the church. When you realize that, you should also realize that the family should have the focus of teaching your children about the gospel. The church has instructed us to have family home evening, family prayer and family scripture study to do these things. There are are all things that we can do to teach our children the gospel. There have been times when my family is really focused on the gospel and times when they are not so much. When we make the gospel and Christ the focus of the family everything … Continue reading

Five Resolutions to Bring the Spirit into Your Home

I love it when home feels like a refuge from the rest of the world. It is important to create a space that allows your family to feel comfortable, loved and accepted no matter what. One of the best ways to do this is to have the spirit in the home at all times. It can be difficult to do this on a daily basis. Here are five resolutions to help your family bring the spirit into his home. First strive to have family prayer and scriptures study every day. This is one of the best ways that you can … Continue reading

Choosing the Best for Your Family

Each day as parents we make choices that will affect our children for years to come. The way we prioritize our time for family and other activities will directly affect how are children perceive what is truly important. If we are putting the gospel essentials last, it is much more likely that our children will look on the gospel as an afterthought. It is important that you take the time periodically to take stock of where you are and make an corrections that you need to. You should examine how effective your family home evening lessons and scripture study times … Continue reading

Establish a House

One of my favorite scriptures is Doctrine and Covenants 88:119. It reads: “Organize yourselves: establish every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.” I like this scripture because it gives specific areas that you should work on. I am someone who likes to make goals and work towards specific things, and this scripture helps me to look at areas of my life that I might not otherwise consider. It is so important … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week in Review: January 28th – February 3rd

Sunday School The Sunday school lesson for this week centered around John 3-4. We examined various parts of the lesson throughout the week. In Spiritually Reborn, we looked at the need to not only be baptized but to be ‘born again’ of the spirit. In Because of the Simpleness of the Way, we talked about the relative simplicity of casting our eyes – and our whole beings – on Christ, and following the paths He walked. In A Well of Living Water, we talked about Christ’s meeting with the Samaritan woman at the well, and how we, too, can draw … Continue reading

Creating A Reverent Home

For the last part of creating a learning-centered home, we are going to discuss creating reverence. Reverence is not simply standing with ones arms folded and being quiet. President David O. McKay defined it as “profound respect mingled with love” (Conference Report, Apr 1967, 86). President Kimball admonished the Saints to be models of reverent behavior. As we are reverent through our daily lives, we will bring the Spirit with us; as our homes become more reverent, we will be able to instruct and uplift our families. As with most things in the parenting world, the best way to teach … Continue reading

Creating a Learning Atmosphere

When it comes to the spiritual atmosphere in our home, we can create one that is either conducive to learning, or not. Some of the responsibility for such an atmosphere lies on us as parents; some of it lies on our children. As parents, we have a more direct role than an ordinary teacher in controlling what habits our children learn. When we work to create a learning atmosphere, and take the time to raise our kids in it, then they will also take the steps necessary to maintain that atmosphere. How We Can Contribute to a Learning Atmosphere In … Continue reading

Creating a Spiritual Home Environment

It is important to have a home that is conducive to feeling the spirit. A home, which is this way, will be more inviting to those that visit. It will help your family to get along. It will give you opportunities to teach your children about the gospel on a daily basis. Here are a few suggestions to help you have a positive home environment. 1) Keep your house clean and orderly. This can be difficult, especially if you have young children or a large family. You can have your children help pick up their toys, and put their things … Continue reading

The Soundtrack of Our Lives

As Latter-day Saints, we have been told that “the song of the righteous is a prayer” unto God (D&C 25:12). The scriptures themselves are littered with songs – from the Song of Solomon and the Psalms in the Old Testament to ‘the psalm of Nephi’ which, though not a song, certainly sings to the soul. At the same time, many of us spend our lives surrounded with ‘regular’ music. Whether we listen to the radio in the car, or to tapes (does anyone still listen to those?) or CDs at home, or just sing along with our kids, music is … Continue reading
