Getting to Know People in Your Wardby Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger 01 Mar 2008 11:16 PM It is important to build friendships inside of your ward. The ward is like a family. There are people in your family that you just don't get along with, and others that you are best friends with. A ward family can be the same way, but if you feel lonely and isolated in your ward, you can try to reach out to others. Often there are other families that feel the same way. When you begin to reach out to others, you may need to look outside your comfort zone. Often we tend to gravitate to people who are the same as us. They have children the same ages or they are in the same stage of life. While this may be easier, you may be surprised at how much you can learn from a couple that is older from you or how much a younger family helps you out. Inviting others over for dinner or to play games is a great way to get to know them. Additionally it is important to be friendly to everyone in your ward. There will be personality conflicts in any ward, but by focusing on the gospel and being friendly, you can overcome the conflicts. If the conflicts are especially heated or bitter, you may be best to limit the contact to a friendly smile in the hall. It is important to not discuss the issues with those around you. This will only cause more negative feelings in the ward. While Sundays are focused on learning the gospel, you can still greet people and catch up quickly. A great way to learn more about other members is to attend the ward activities and Enrichment activities. These activities will give you more time to really get to know others and spend time together. Serving in a church calling is also a great way to get to know others in your ward.
