Getting to Know People in Your New Ward

The first Sunday at a new ward can be an awkward one. Which benches are free? Will anyone come up and introduce themselves? Hopefully, you'll have a good welcome and easy adjustment, but what if you don't? I've moved into wards that it seemed like I couldn't get to know anyone. Every time I would talk to someone in Relief Society, she would tell me that I needed to talk to someone else. It was so frustrating. I didn't feel like anyone wanted to be my friend.

Although some wards are friendlier than others are, I think that every ward has something to offer. You can still make friends, but it may take a bit more effort than you are used to. The first thing you should do is to commit to yourself that you will attend every meeting on Sundays. That means attending from Sacrament meeting all the way through until Relief Society. You should also attend as many of the extra activities as possible. If there is a ward activity, go to it with your family. If there is an Enrichment night please attend it. Sometimes on Sunday with the classes, there is little time to socialize with others.

One great way to get to know people is to sit next to someone new every week. Introduce yourself, and ask them a few questions. As the conversation unfolds you may find that you have a kindred spirit in this sister. Don't let yourself become caught up in finding friends that are exactly like you, or your same age. You can learn from each individual in the ward.

If you are someone who is well established in your ward (meaning you've been there for years) try to include the new sisters in your activities. Take an active interest in welcoming and getting to know them. It may be difficult to step outside of your usual routine, but the new family in the ward will appreciate any effort you make.
