The Church is Still True

The Relief Society president told me I’m fat. The Cub Scout leader made fun of my son when he couldn’t remember the Cub Scout promise. The elders quorum president forgot to arrange for help when I moved and I ended up doing the whole thing myself. When I told the bishop about my marital problems, he said I needed to be more humble. My home teacher thinks I don’t have enough faith. In every branch of the Church, in every state, country and province in the world, you will find ward members that don’t get along. There will always be … Continue reading

General Conference: “Looking Back and Moving Forward

“Looking Back and Moving Forward” Is President Monson’s first talk in which he addresses the entire church after he was sustained as the new prophet of the church. He begins the talk by sharing his feelings when he was first called to serve in the Quorum on the Twelve Apostles. He then explained what happened when he was called to be the prophet. He gives thanks for everyone sustaining him in his calling. President Monson goes on to share his testimony of the gospel. He then shares the story of his great grandfather coming to Utah from Sweden. He speaks … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review July 21st-26th

Welcome to our LDS Week in Review! In case you were otherwise occupied and didn’t have the chance to drop in throughout the week, here’s a summary so you can get caught up. We started the week with “Teaching Your Sunbeam to Attend Class,” which discusses the natural rambunctious tendencies of three-year-olds and the difficulties they have learning to sit still. Then we investigated the strange ways husbands and wives communicate down the length of chapel benches in “Sacrament Meeting Sign Language.” In “Relief Society: Reaching Out,” we are reminded of the importance of extending arms of friendship to the … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Organization and Destiny of the True and Living Church

Backtracking a bit to catch up, lesson #11 in the Joseph Smith manual for this year’s course of study is entitled, “The Organization and Destiny of the True and Living Church.” After the Book of Mormon was completely translated, Joseph Smith took it in to be published. Seven months later, it was ready to be distributed, and at this time, he set about officially organizing the Church. This took place in Fayette, New York, with sixty people present, crowded into a very small room. Joseph knew the Church would not always remain so small—he had seen the future of the … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: Heeding the Voice of the Prophets

Our First Presidency Message for the month of July comes to us from Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency. He reminds us that ours is a worldwide church, with members in nearly every nation, and that we all are children of our Heavenly Father, who shows us His love in part by providing us with living prophets. We have had an unbroken succession of prophets from Joseph Smith down to our present day, as we’ve recently seen with the passing of Gordon B. Hinckley and the sustaining of Thomas S. Monson. There is always a president at … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review June 2nd-7th

Welcome to our Week in Review here in LDS. If you weren’t able to join us throughout the week, here is your chance to get caught up at a glance. We began the week with “Depression vs. Depression,” which talks about the differences in the two definitions of the word “depression” and how we can best support those who are dealing with the effects of the condition. Then we had a book review on “The Master Deceiver,” which talks about the importance of fortifying ourselves against the adversary. We kept on track with our “Dinner Discussions” for the week, and … Continue reading

General Conference: “The True and Living Church”

In his talk “The True and Living Church” President Henry B. Eyring speaks about how the church is true and it continues even after a prophet passes away. President Eyring points out the keys of the priesthood were restored to the earth by the Apostle Peter when he gave them Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith conferred those keys to the quorum of the Twelve, so the church continued after he died. President Eyring points out that it is important to live worthily so that the keys will continue to be on the earth. We truly sustain our leaders when we heed … Continue reading

Gospel Questions: Do Mormons Think They Have the Only True Church?

I do like to ask and answer the hard questions, don’t I? Well, this one is definitely a hotbed of debate. One of the concerns that people of other religions have about the LDS Church is that we seem to think we’re the only true church. Let me shed just a little more light on this. When Jesus Christ was on the earth, He set up His church the way He wanted it to be run. He had apostles, prophets, ordinances, the sacrament, priesthood authority, and He showed His disciples how to use all of them. When He died, and … Continue reading

In Defense of “Women Who Know”

You all know how much I like to editorialize. I’ve cut back on my editorial proclivities somewhat over the last few months, but every so often, a subject comes up that just raises those ol’ hackles and I feel the strongest urge to speak out and make a nuisance of myself. That’s exactly what I’m about to do right now. Sister Julie B. Beck, over the course of the General Women’s Conference and then the Sunday session of General Conference, gave two of the most beautiful talks I’ve ever heard given by a General Relief Society President. Miriam will provide … Continue reading
