Tithing Settlement: A Time to Reflect on Blessings

This time of a year is one where we get to reflect on the blessings of tithing. Tithing is a commandment that we learn about in Malachi. We should pay ten percent of our earnings in tithing each year. Tithing settlement is the time where we tell the bishop if we were able to pay a full tithe or not. It is also a time for the bishop to check on the status of each family during the year. Even if you have not paid a full tithing you should go tithing settlement to talk to the bishop. This is … Continue reading

Tithing Blessings

Paying your tithing is always a choice that you make. Each month you can choose not to pay it, though some months may seem more difficult than others. When you are truly struggling to make ends meet, it can be difficult to choose to send in the tithing check each month. However paying tithing is a commandment, and we should follow it. Additionally paying tithing is a commandment with a promise. In Malachi 3:10 it reads: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse . . . and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will … Continue reading

Are You Struggling to Pay Tithing?

Many people struggle with the concept of tithing. Ten percent is a significant portion of your income. Many people become resentful of the money that they pay for tithing. Tithing brings promised blessings, which include being able to take care of your family. It helps you spiritually as well to pay tithing. This simple act of obedience and faith can really help your testimony to grow by leaps … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Law of Tithing”

In his talk “The Law of Tithing” Elder Daniel L Johnson speaks about the law of tithing. He goes over the basics of the law of tithing and explains each of the aspect of the law of tithing. He speaks specifically to those who may struggle with paying their tithing. He acknowledges that at times it may be difficult to pay our tithing because of other obligations, but that we are blessed when we do so. Elder Johnson explains that tithing is ten percent of all your increase and gain. It is important to realize that it is a set … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: July 15-21

From seminary to tithing to LDS secrets, this week carried with it a number of blogs sure to help and entertain you. Gospel Doctrine: In What Christ’s Resurrection Means to Each of Us, we discussed the impact of the resurrection in our lives. In Witness of the Resurrected Lord, we discussed various people who saw the Lord following His resurrection. In Doubting Thomas, we considered the disciples who doubted news of Christ’s resurrection. In The Value of the Old Testament, we discuss the relevance of the first book of the bible. In Did Not Our Hearts Burn?, we discussed the … Continue reading

RS/EQ: All That My Father Hath

As I studied the second section in the President Kimball manual today, my eye was drawn to the reference to D&C 84:39. Here, President Kimball speaks of a covenant. Although it doesn’t specifically relate to integrity, I would like to take this chance to explore that covenant. After all, it is difficult to keep up our end of a promise if we don’t know what the promise is. This section of the Doctrine and Covenants starts in verse 33, and refers to those who are “faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods…and the magnifying their calling.” In short, the people … Continue reading

Giving Your Money Away

We talk a great deal about service in the church, and very little about giving financially. Financial information seems to run along two lines: we need to get out of and stay out of debt, and we need to pay our tithes and offerings. Rarely is a connection made between the two, and yet one exists. I’m not saying that you can solve everything with money, but there are times when it can make a big difference. Even worse, when you are tight because you are in debt up to your eyebrows, you find yourself unable to give. Unlike most … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: They Forsook All, and Followed Him

For today’s scripture study, I examined Luke 5:1-17. In these verses, Christ ministers to a crowd, and then calls His disciples to follow Him. Although we examined the reactions of Peter, Andrew, James, and John two weeks ago, I noticed something different in their calling. In Matthew 4, we watch the disciples immediately spring into action. Without hesitation, they decided to serve and follow the Master. Today, as I studied, I see that not only were ‘quick to observe’, they were also complete in their following. “They forsook all,” verse 11 tells us, “and followed him.” If you follow the … Continue reading

More Tips on Giving Away your Cash

In my last post I talked about giving away a bit of your cash. Start with a small amount, but do it every month and watch your horizons expand. The principles of giving can be found in every spiritual practice from Christian tithing to Hindi Seva (giving of yourself). Why is giving encouraged? Giving does more for you than for the person receiving, although of course it helps the person in need as well. It helps build our inner strength, character, stretches our compassion, helps us live outside of our selfish selves. In other words, giving is good for us. … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Doers of the Word

Now that we have finished pondering the quotes from President Kimball this week, you may have wondered what else there is to study in the lesson. If you turn to the back, you will see a list of ‘related scriptures’ to read and ponder. As usual, I wound up caught up in the first scripture and didn’t make it to the rest. I guess it’s a good thing I have an entire week to study! The first scripture referenced is James 1:22. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” This scripture fits … Continue reading
