In his talk "Now Is the Time to Serve a Mission!" Elder Richard G. Scott speaks about the importance of missionary work. He says:

"It would be difficult to imagine anything more exciting to do as a young man, woman, or couple in the world today than to be a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The message of the restored gospel we share is absolutely vital. It is from God our Eternal Father for every one of His children on earth and is centered in His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. When that message is understood and lived, it can replace turmoil with peace, sorrow with happiness and provide solutions to life's persistent challenges."

Elder Scott then goes on to talk about how the missionary program has changed with the introduction of "Preach My Gospel." He tells parents that this is an excellent tool to teach both their sons and daughters the basic gospel principles. It also will prepare them for future missionary experience.

Elder Scott goes on to discuss the important role a bishop has in influencing young men to serve missions. Bishops should also consider asking older couples to consider serving a mission. He shares a story about his daughter who had always wanted to serve a mission, but as the time approached she became unsure. She went and spoke to her bishop who encouraged her to serve. She went and was greatly blessed for her service.

Elder Scott goes on to speak about how missions are wonderful growing experiences for those that go on them. They are blessed as they serve the Lord. Elder Scott shares his own personal choice to go on a mission, and is grateful for the growth that took place while he was on his mission.

Elder Scott counsels young men to speak to their parents and bishop if they are unsure of going on a mission. It is an important decision. He also encourages young men to pray about the decision.

This is a wonderful talk, and it lists many of the positive aspects of serving a mission. It also speaks of the importance of preparing to go on a mission. I hope that you will take the time to read it.
