Hope – a Gift from God

Today is a day of sadness for America as we commemorate the sixth anniversary of the World Trade Center bombings. However, it is not a day for despair. God wants us to have hope in all our trials, and today is no different. Elder M. Russell Ballard, in his Ensign article “The Hope of Joy Fulfilled,” November 1992 said: “My message to you today, my brothers and sisters, is simply this: the Lord is in control. He knows the end from the beginning. He has given us adequate instruction that, if followed, will see us safely through any crisis. His … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review August 27-September 1

I want to start the week in review by saying good bye to Nola. She explains her decision to leave in Farewell. I have really enjoyed reading her insights and having her as a coblogger. I wish her the very best. I also want to welcome Tristi aboard as an LDS blogger. She has been blogging here for some time in both Media and Movie reviews. She has also completed some guest LDS blogs. I know that she will have a lot to share as well. In Chronology of the Old Testament Nola explains how the events in the Old … Continue reading

Repentance

Over the past week I have spent a great deal of time cleaning out a closet in my home. In this particular closet I had stored several years of clothes for my children. I spent the time sorting through the boxes, organizing them and giving away the excess I had accumulated. As I finished up the job today, I felt a great deal of satisfaction, and peace because I knew that I had completed a job I have been putting off for over a year. I also though about how much this cleaning was like repentance. As I addressed the … Continue reading

Have You Drifted Away?

It can be difficult to get back on the right path when you have strayed or drifted away. You may catch yourself and realize that you have slacked off in the areas of personal prayer and scripture study or you may be trying to come back after not attending church for awhile. Change is always difficult, and if you try to do too much at once, you often inadvertently make it too difficult to accomplish. I am reminded of an analogy that several General Authorities have used about staying on the right path. They compare it to flying and that … Continue reading

Young Women: “Remembering, Repenting and Changing”

In her talk “Remembering, Repenting and Changing” Sister Julie B Beck speaks to the Young Women of the church. She opens the talk by sharing the stories of three women. The first story is about Ruth May Fox, a former Young Women general president. She came across the plains. She had a quick temper when she was young, but was able to change as she worked on it. The next story is about a woman named Mary. She decided to ignore the counsel to not drink coffee, deciding it didn’t hurt anyone. She raised ten children, only one of which … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Hope and Repentance

The Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum lesson this week bears the same name as the title of one of my favorite books – The Miracle of Forgiveness (by, who else? President Kimball!). I am really looking forward to studying and hearing this lesson. As I read the first segment, “From the Life of Spencer W. Kimball”, I was touched by the woman who had no hope. According to President Kimball, “hope is…the great incentive for repentance, for without it no one would make the extended effort required.” Well, it certainly cannot be argued that full and total, leaving-the-sin repentance is … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Atonement Can Secure Your Peace and Happiness”

In “The Atonement Can Secure Your Peace and Happiness,” Elder Richard G Scott talks about the importance of centering your life on Christ, so that you can find true happiness. Elder Scott opens with the analogy of two different types of rock climbers. He speaks of the solo climbers who live on the edge and those that climb with partners using anchors and rope to ensure their safety while they climb. Elder Scott goes on to compare the solo climbers as those who go through life without guidance. Those that climb with partners are compared to people who rely on … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Quick to Forgive

The Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum lesson for the fourth Sunday of the month comes from the most recent General Conference issue of the Ensign. Each ward and branch, of course, will be different. On top of that, Miriam generally handles the summaries of the General Conference address. I, of course, don’t want to step on her toes and attempt to resummarize. Instead, I will be seeking out specific doctrinal issues that pertain to the talks and researching them in the scriptures. Although you may not be specifically studying that talk at this time, I hope that the thoughts and … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Ye Ought ‘Not Procrastinate the Day of Your Repentence’

We are already a week into the new year. How are you doing at keeping your New Year’s resolutions? Have you started yet, or are you putting them off until ‘tomorrow’? Some resolutions may not matter, but others may well have eternal consequences. The first Priesthood/Relief Society lesson from “Teachings of the Presidents of the Church” is entitled “To Live With Him Someday.” President Kimball discusses the things we need to do to return home to our Heavenly Father. As I studied the lesson, one of President Kimball’s quotes stood out in my mind. One of the most serious human … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: A Light to Darkness

As I prepare for Sunday’s classes, I try to break each lesson down into smaller parts and study it throughout the week. This helps me to ponder the various parts of each lesson more fully, and to do more in-depth study of each section. It also makes the larger parts easier to handle. The first two scriptures I found in the first Sunday School lesson of the new year gives me an overview of Christ’s life and mission. What a way to start the new year and a new way to study! Isaiah 61:1-3 was a quote that Christ actually … Continue reading
