General Conference From the Past: “Women of Righteousness”

In a devotional address given at BYU on March 13, 2001, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve addressed the role of women, and how God views them. This was a wonderful talk that I, as a stay-at-home mom, particularly took to heart. It is very uplifting and, as Elder Ballard stated, good for both women and men to read and ponder. He begins by quoting a letter sent to church headquarters from an LDS woman who felt as though she were living a lie. Despite a strong testimony of the gospel, she doubted her value beyond … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Mission of the Holy Ghost

In John 16, we learn a little bit about the mission of the Holy Ghost. In verse 8, we are told that “he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” Then, in verse 13, we read that “he will guide you in all truth…and he will shew you all things to come.” From these verses, we learn a little bit about the role of the Spirit in our lives. He reproves us from sin by alerting us to our misconduct. When we are engaged in sinful behavior – or when we are omitting righteous behavior … Continue reading

General Conference: “Remember and Perish Not”

In his talk “Remember and Perish Not” Elder Marlin K Jensen opens his talk by sharing how he felt the first time that he spoke at General Conference. He goes on to speak of how much he likes to share his memories with those around him, though as a youth he said he would not do this. Elder Jensen then begins to speak about the importance of remembering. Elder Jensen says: “If we pay close attention to the uses of the word remember in the holy scriptures, we will recognize that remembering in the way God intends is a fundamental … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching: Spiritual Promptings

One of the greatest claims that we have once we have been confirmed as members of Christ’s church is the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. So long as we keep our lives in order, so long as we constantly strive to draw closer to our Savior, we have both the blessing and the right to claim divine inspiration as it is needed in our lives. This month’s visiting teaching lesson focuses on how we, as sisters, can become an instrument in God’s hands as we listen to and obey the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Many times in our … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Testifying of Christ

As I studied Luke 2:15-39 this morning, I was touched by the number of witnesses proclaimed the divinity of the infant Christ. I examined the actions of the shepherds, Simeon, and Anna, all of whom recognized in the babe His true identity. I then pondered how I could and should be like them. The shepherds were the first group I encountered in today’s scripture study. Having been persuaded by the visitation of the Heavenly Host, they decided to go to Bethlehem immediately to see these things for themselves. I love the way the scriptures describe their actions – “they came … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Endure To The End

The third section of this week’s lesson by President Kimball is subheaded “The gospel of Jesus Christ charts our course back to our Heavenly Father”. Here, President Kimball expands on how the laws and ordinances of the gospel, coupled with the atoning power of Christ and the power of forgiveness in our lives, bring us home to dwell with Heavenly Father again. Over and over he stresses that there is no other way to return to our Father except through Christ. So many subjects came to my mind as I studied this section that deciding on one was nearly impossible. … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Power of Personal Testimony”

In his talk “The Power of Personal Testimony” Elder Dieter F Uchtdorf speaks about how our testimony will help us change and help others. He opens his talk by sharing the story of Nephi being commanded to build the boat. Elder Uchtdorf says that Nephi demonstrated his testimony when he faithfully began to build the boat when he had no knowledge of how to do so. Elder Uchtdorf then shares his story of learning to speak English. He uses this story to demonstrate that our actions are influenced by our motives. He was motivated to learn English when he realized … Continue reading

Scripture Study Schedules

Does your family, like many, struggle with studying the scriptures together? Perhaps the problem isn’t desire but instead simple technical difficulties. A shift in your routine might make for a more pleasant, spiritual experience. We have often been counseled by our leaders to spend time as a family each day feasting on the words of Christ. Many times I have heard parents emphasize that even if your family grumbles through the study, the important thing to do is to build good habits. And I agree. Yet I wonder how much considering the individual needs and personality of our family might … Continue reading

The Blessings of Scripture Study

The scriptures are a very important tool available to us in our daily lives. The scriptures teach us the word of God. They provide guidance to us in difficult situations. They can bring us comfort in times of pain and sorrow. The scriptures can become more and more familiar the more you that you study them and partake of the words. I was blessed to have a mother who taught me to read the scriptures. When I was little she read me the stories from the scriptures. She set up a family scripture reading time every night as well. She … Continue reading

General Conference: “Holy Scriptures: The Power of God Unto Our Salvation”

In his talk “Holy Scriptures: The Power of God Unto Our Salvation” Elder Robert D Hales speaks about the importance of studying the scriptures. He begins by looking at the Book of Mormon. He points out that the title page says that the Book of Mormon was written because God commanded it. Elder Hales then goes on to share that after Lehi had fled Jerusalem that Nephi and his brothers were sent back to retrieve the Brass Plates, so that they would have the scriptures. He speaks of the importance of the scriptures in keeping you on the path to … Continue reading
