Preparing a Talk with your Primary Child

My four-year-old was assigned her first talk this past Sunday in Primary. I was told that it could be anywhere from 5 seconds in length to 10 minutes. That’s a big gap huh? But, I guess for the sunbeams, you never know what to expect! Her topic was, “The mission of the church is to invite all to come unto Christ” That’s a big topic for such a little person. How do you write talks with your primary-aged child? This can be a little daunting. Do you write it for them? Do you let them write it? What’s the protocol? … Continue reading

General Conference: “Prophets in the Land”

In his talk “Prophets in the Land” Elder Jeffrey R Holland speaks about the importance of listening to the prophets during General Conference. He begins by telling the story of Carolyn Rasmus. She began teaching at BYU, one Saturday she went hiking with colleagues from the school. She was surprised when they stopped to listen to conference. She did not realize that there were prophets on the earth. After listening to conference she began to investigate the church and finally joined. Elder Holland says that General Conferences declare three things to the world. He says: “First, they declare eagerly and … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: Preparing the Way

As I studied the ministry of John the Baptist, I found a talk in the archives that touched on his life, his teachings, and his ministry. In April 1980, Elder Thomas S. Monson gave a talk entitled “Preparing the Way”. President Monson’s talk centered primarily on the Aaronic priesthood, which John held. This priesthood came to him by virtue of his lineage; like his father, Zacharias, he was able to administer in the ordinances thereof. This priesthood enabled him to baptize, both mortal men and the Savior of the world. Elder Monson discusses the fact that the power of the … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: Treasure of Eternal Value

Our First Presidency Message for the month of April comes from our new prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and is entitled, “Treasure of Eternal Value.” He begins his address by telling us of his boyhood, when he enjoyed reading the book “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson. He also saw adventure movies with lost treasure and listened to radio programs that featured buried gold. All these things were appealing to a young boy. But later, he heard of a different kind of treasure, one spoken of by the Savior in the Sermon on the Mount, a treasure in Heaven that moths … Continue reading

The Blessings of the Priesthood

There are lots of reasons to be grateful for my husband, but recently I stopped to ponder how fortunate I am to have a worthy priesthood holder in my home. As a convert, this is not a blessing I have taken for granted, but I must confess that in the last six and a half years of marriage, there have been times when I have forgotten what a wonderful thing this is. I have been working with an inactive single mom, trying to love her back to church and show her that we still love and care for her. In … Continue reading

Serving in the Relief Society: Teacher

Another calling in the Relief Society is as a teacher. A teacher is responsible for giving the lessons on Sunday. One nice thing about Relief Society is that you generally are just assigned one week a month to teach. This allows a teacher ample time to prepare her lesson. The lessons for the second and third week are assigned from The Teachings of the Living Prophets manual (currently Spencer W Kimball) and the fourth week’s lessons are from past General Conference talks. While I have never actually served as a teacher in Relief Society, I have had the opportunity to … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week In Review: January 21-27

It’s always nice to wrap up the week and summarize, especially if you’ve missed our blogs (I know you’d never do that)! As we start getting ready for Sunday, let’s take a look at what we’ve covered getting ready for our lessons. Sunday School We started off the week by examining the mission of John the Baptist in Prepare His Way and Making His Paths Straight. John helped prepare those he preached to for the mortal ministry of Christ. We took a look at how we can help prepare those around us for His second coming. In Unquenchable Fire, we … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: The Life of Spencer W. Kimball

As you know the Relief Society and Priesthood lessons will be based on the teachings of Spencer W. Kimball this year. It would be great if you took the time to introduce your entire family to this wonderful prophet. President Kimball is the first prophet that I remember. I was born while he was prophet, and I have memories of him during General Conference. I have also been touched by the stories from his life that show his love and service to others. He was a truly great man. You can begin the lesson by sharing a little bit about … Continue reading
