In his talk "Faith, Service, Constancy" Elder David S Baxter speaks to the new members of the church. He briefly shares the story of his conversion, and then adds that there are three areas that are gospel fundamentals. The areas are faith, service, and constancy.

Elder Baxter first speaks about the importance of faith in Jesus Christ. He says:

"Faith fuels hope. Our perspective changes; our vision becomes clearer. We begin to look for the best, not the worst, in life and in others. We gain a deeper sense of life's purpose and meaning. Despair gives way to joy.

Faith such as this is a heavenly gift, but it can be sought and cultivated. As our Bible Dictionary suggests, often 'faith is kindled by hearing the testimony of those who have faith.' Faith is then nurtured as we allow ourselves to believe. Like all other virtues, faith is strengthened as we practice it, as we live and act as if our faith were already deep. Faith is the product of righteous desire, belief, and obedience."

Elder Baxter then speaks about the importance of service. He speaks about how service in the church allows you to grow. It allows your understanding to increase. He also spoke of how when you are serving others your own trials and burdens seem less important. It is important to learn to see beyond yourself, because this leads to true happiness.

The final gospel fundamental is constancy. Elder Baxter first speaks about how there will trials throughout your life. He speaks about times that will be hard to face, no matter what you do. He then speaks about the importance of having a strong foundation to rely on. He refers to the parable of the wise man who built his house upon a rock. He points out that because he had a sure foundation he was able to stand strong. He goes on to say that staying true to your beliefs, and turning to the Lord in prayer will offer you guidance during the difficult times.

This is an excellent talk. I really enjoyed Elder Baxter's comments on faith. Service does uplift you as you focus on others instead of yourself. It is also important to realize that even though you will still face trials, it is important to stand firm. Life may be difficult, but you can find comfort through the trials as you turn to the Lord. I hope that you will take the time to read this talk.
