Mormons and Divorce – Part Two: What are Grounds for Divorce?

As I stated in my previous blog in our “Mormons and Divorce” series, the goal is to do whatever it takes to keep our marriages strong and healthy so we can be together eternally. However, this is not always possible. While every situation is different and I can’t speak for your leaders or pretend to know more about your circumstances than I do, here are some examples of times when your Church leaders might be inclined to support your decision to divorce. Adultery. The Church has a firm stance on adultery and members who commit this sin will most generally … Continue reading

During the April 1954 General Conference, Elder Milton R. Hunter of the First Council of the Seventy delivered a talk on obtaining joy. In this talk, he discusses how we as Latter-day Saints have the tools for true happiness within our grasp. It is up to us to use them. Elder Hunter begins by asking, if you had one wish, what would it be? He noted that, in his years at teaching institute, many would respond with material wishes. After some discussion, they concluded that the things of this world were of only passing consequence. They do not provide complete … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Father, Come Home”

In the April 1993 General Conference, Elder James E. Faust of the Quorum of the Twelve delivered a talk on fatherhood entitled, ‘Father, Come Home.’ In it, he expounds upon the importance of fathers in the lives of their children, both temporally and spiritually. Elder Faust begins by affirming his belief of the sanctity of womanhood and the divine role of motherhood. But “it … Continue reading

In a General Conference talk given in October 1977, entitled “The Enriching of Marriage”, Elder James E. Faust of the Presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy outlines a variety of methods to avoid divorce by growing and strengthening our marriages. Elder Faust first tells the story of a woman who received a justified divorce, by his reckoning. Several years later, the woman told him that, had she known then what she knew ‘now’, she would have remained in the marriage. He goes on to cite the statistic that, as he gave his talk, for every 100 marriages in … Continue reading

Picture Perfect

The other day in church, a woman came up to me and told me that she loved sitting behind my little family. “Really?”, I thought. What I wanted to say was, “It doesn’t distract you to have my kids crying, thrashing around, wrestling with each other, making their toys talk to each other as loud as possible, and having to get up with them 5 times in the middle of the meeting?” She was trying to give me a compliment, so I took it. She said that we looked like such a “normal mormon family” and that my husband and … Continue reading
