General Conference: “The Priesthood–A Sacred Gift”

In his talk, “The Priesthood—A Sacred Gift,” President Thomas S. Monson speaks about the importance of living worthy of the priesthood. He points out the number of men who hold the priesthood compared to the number of people in the world. He reminds the men that the priesthood is the power of God and that they need to live worthy of it. He warns that the world has many things in it that entice people away from righteous living. President Monson goes on to say that it is important to have courage. It is the courage to do what is … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Women of Righteousness”

In a devotional address given at BYU on March 13, 2001, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve addressed the role of women, and how God views them. This was a wonderful talk that I, as a stay-at-home mom, particularly took to heart. It is very uplifting and, as Elder Ballard stated, good for both women and men to read and ponder. He begins by quoting a letter sent to church headquarters from an LDS woman who felt as though she were living a lie. Despite a strong testimony of the gospel, she doubted her value beyond … Continue reading

General Conference: “Ye Must Be Born Again”

In his talk “Ye Must Be Born Again” Elder David A Bednar begins his talk by explaining the process of canning a pickle. The first step is to clean the cucumber. The second step is to immerse the cucumber in brine, so that it can transform into a pickle. The third step is to seal the jars so that you can use them at a different time. Elder Bednar then goes on to explain that in order for us to become spiritually transformed, we need to complete a similar process. He says: “We are instructed to ‘come unto Christ, and … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Commitment to the Gospel

This week’s family home evening lesson is about helping your children to commit to keeping the commandments. You can learn more about this topic by reading “Commitment to the Lord” by Elder John B Dickson. You may want think about a personal story of how you were able to commit to the Lord. You should open the lesson with a prayer. You can begin by sharing Joshua 24:15. After you read this scripture you should discuss the meaning of the scripture briefly. You may want to pull some examples from the talk about how committing to keep the commandments can … Continue reading

General Conference: “Commitment to the Lord”

In his talk “Commitment to the Lord” Elder John B Dickson speaks specifically to the youth of the church. Elder Dickson emphasizes the strength of today’s youth and the importance of following the plan of salvation. He says: “You have come into this world at a time that has been anticipated from the beginning—a time prior to the Second Coming of the Lord, in which, on one hand, the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored in its fullness and, on the other, there is great turmoil, confusion, and wickedness. The proving ground that you were born into is wonderful, … Continue reading

General Conference from the Past: “Conversion and Commitment”

As I researched some scriptures for this week’s lesson by President Kimball, I found an old General Conference talk that caught my attention. Since it is over a decade old, I thought it would be an excellent time to review and summarize it. The talk was given by Elder W. Mack Lawrence of the Seventy during the April 1996 General Conference. Focusing primarily on our conversion to the gospel and the subsequent commitment we have to obedience to its principles, Elder Lawrence emphasized our need to “strengthen our conversion to Christ.” Elder Lawrence started out by quoting Elder Romney of … Continue reading

Seeking and Following the Spirit-Part II

If you missed part I in this series, go here first. If we truly want to seek the spirit, first, we have to want the Holy Ghost in our lives. I’m sure all of us can think of a time in our lives where we were more spiritually minded. Maybe some of you are experiencing that time right now. But, maybe some of you can think of more spiritual times in your life than right now. One thing we need to do is to WANT the Holy Ghost in our lives daily. This is the first step in seeking it. … Continue reading

Tithing Blessings

Paying your tithing is always a choice that you make. Each month you can choose not to pay it, though some months may seem more difficult than others. When you are truly struggling to make ends meet, it can be difficult to choose to send in the tithing check each month. However paying tithing is a commandment, and we should follow it. Additionally paying tithing is a commandment with a promise. In Malachi 3:10 it reads: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse . . . and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Law of Chastity

President Kimball was the prophet when I was born, and my earliest memories are of him at the pulpit in General Conference. I love his straight-forward style of teaching, and this lesson, #17 and entitled “The Law of Chastity,” is a perfect example of this. He tells us in plain language what God’s will us for us concerning chastity, and I will pass that plainness along today. The quote that heads this lesson reads: “The Lord has only one standard of morality—total chastity for both men and women before marriage and complete fidelity afterward.” President Kimball goes on to say … Continue reading

RS/EQ: What is Integrity?

This week’s Relief Society/Elder’s Quorum lesson is on integrity. But what, exactly, is integrity? To me, it’s one of those hard-to-define words; something you know innately but cannot exactly express (and for a writer, that’s saying a lot!). I like the way President Kimball expresses it: “the willingness and ability to live by our beliefs and commitments.” There are two parts verb and two parts noun to this definition. First, the nouns. We must have our beliefs and our commitments laid out before us. In order to have integrity, we must actually believe in something. Whether it is a belief … Continue reading
