Coping with Ward Changes

Two weeks ago, we got the news that our stake was finally going to re-allign the ward boundaries. This is big news, and a long time coming. Last year about the same time, 3 stakes in our area were combined into two. This area of Salt Lake has struggled in recent years to maintain members. So, many of the wards, including ours, have struggled a lot. Our ward currently has just a handful of members. We have maybe 100 attending sacrament meeting. Enough youth to count on one hand, and just a few more primary children. It is hard. So, … Continue reading

Is Stake Conference a Free Pass?

I was in ward council the other day and the Bishop was going on and on about how we all need to attend stake conference. He read an email from the Stake President encouraging all members to attend the meetings during stake conference weekend. I thought to myself, “Do members really think this is an excuse to skip church?” I have to admit, that I have been tempted in the past. I have two small children who can barely sit still through one hour of sacrament meeting. One certain two-year-old boy will go un-named, but he knows who he is. … Continue reading

Picture Perfect

The other day in church, a woman came up to me and told me that she loved sitting behind my little family. “Really?”, I thought. What I wanted to say was, “It doesn’t distract you to have my kids crying, thrashing around, wrestling with each other, making their toys talk to each other as loud as possible, and having to get up with them 5 times in the middle of the meeting?” She was trying to give me a compliment, so I took it. She said that we looked like such a “normal mormon family” and that my husband and … Continue reading

Primary Time: April 2008 Sharing Time

The Primary theme for this month is “I will follow the prophet.” The scripture for the month is Amos 3:7. It reads: “Surely the Lord will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants, the prophets.” The song for this month is “We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet.” You can use this song during your singing time in family home evening. This is a nice song to teach your children, since they may have the opportunity to sing it in Sacrament meeting. The theme is divided into four basic principles. The first principle is that the … Continue reading

Gospel Questions: Do Mormons Think They Have the Only True Church?

I do like to ask and answer the hard questions, don’t I? Well, this one is definitely a hotbed of debate. One of the concerns that people of other religions have about the LDS Church is that we seem to think we’re the only true church. Let me shed just a little more light on this. When Jesus Christ was on the earth, He set up His church the way He wanted it to be run. He had apostles, prophets, ordinances, the sacrament, priesthood authority, and He showed His disciples how to use all of them. When He died, and … Continue reading

Focus on the Sacrament

One of the most important things that we do at church each Sunday is partake of the Sacrament. Often this special ordinance is simply thought of as routine, instead of being treated as sacredly as it should be. It is vital that we each take the time to prepare ourselves to renew our covenants each Sunday. It is also important to apply the covenants that we make to our daily lives. Here is a list of five things you can do to make taking the Sacrament more meaningful. 1) Ideally your preparation should be taking place all week. Take time … Continue reading

Your Preparation for the Sacrament

One important thing that you can do each week is to partake of the Sacrament. This allows you to renew your baptismal covenants. It is a time for self-reflection and chance for you to make sure you are staying on the correct path. It is important that you make it a priority to regularly partake of the Sacrament. You should not allow other things to get in the way of doing so. You may want to take time either Saturday night or Sunday morning to prepare yourself to take the Sacrament.
