Food Storage: Dealing with a Food Shortage

With the recent droughts and flooding, it can be difficult to find and purchase certain items for food storage. This may make getting food storage just that much more important for you to do. But how do you get those hard to find items, and are you prepared to pay more for them? You may consider getting other grains instead of rice and wheat. Before you purchase 100 pounds of barley, make sure that you know what to do with it. You should consider how you would use it. You may want to purchase a little extra so that you … Continue reading

Focus on Food Storage

The rising cost of food may make it more difficult to begin or complete your food storage. However, you can still do it even if you have a limited budget and limited space. You just need to make a consistent goal to put food storage away each month. It is important to start small. The recent pamphlet from the church puts the order as preparing your 72 hour kit, then your two week supply of water. After that you need to store three months of food. Then you should move onto a year’s supply of food. Your 72 hour kit … Continue reading

Food Storage . . . in a Trailer?

We’ve been counseled to get as much food storage as we are able. From six months to two years, whatever is feasible in our situation. Those with less are encouraged to work on getting more. It’s wonderful counsel. I endorse it, love it, approve of it . . . but the doing of it has turned out to be a little tricky. You see, I live in a trailer. It’s a very nice trailer, don’t get me wrong. It’s 17 x 72, which means it’s wider than your average single wide and it’s arranged well. But it does not have … Continue reading

The Right Way to Buy in Bulk

Buying your groceries in bulk can save you some serious money, not to mention extra trips to the store. If you aren’t careful, however, bulk purchases can actually wind up costing you more money that you will save. Know the right way to buy in bulk, so you get the best of both worlds: great pricing and convenience. 1. Watch out for the hidden perishables. You probably know enough not to buy 20 pounds of bananas, unless you own a bakery that produces banana bread, but are you still buying items that will go bad before you can use them? … Continue reading

New Places to Buy in Bulk

When you think about buying in bulk, don’t just think of the warehouse shopping stores. The truth is that you can buy in bulk in many other places, still getting great deals, but avoiding the annual warehouse fee. Here are some of my favorite places to buy in bulk. Target Our local Target store is trying out the whole bulk buying trend. They have devoted an entire section in the back to bulk buys. Not only are the prices pretty good, but because they are trying things out and have limited shelf space, they often clearance some of the merchandise … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – March 24th – 29th

Life never seems to get less busy! If you were too swamped to join us here in LDS, here’s your chance to get caught up. We began with an article from Miriam entitled, “Food Storage Items Available Online.” She tells us about the things she found at the Church’s website, including a pamphlet that tells us how to cook the foods we’ve purchased. It’s important that we remember to include foods to flavor our grains and that we not purchase items that family members may be allergic to. At the same time, we can prepare for our spiritual droughts by … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching By Inspiration

At a recent stake Relief Society training session, I learned something about home and visiting teaching that I had never heard before. In my ten years of visiting sisters in the ward, I generally followed the message published in the Ensign. However, I learned that in various cases – particularly including new and inactive members – the home and visiting teachers have the opportunity to teach outside of the proscribed lessons. In short, as home and visiting teachers (hereafter referred to as visiting teachers because, well, that’s what I do), we have the right to receive revelation pertaining to the … Continue reading
