Food Storage: Dealing with a Food Shortageby Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger 05 Jul 2008 02:19 PM With the recent droughts and flooding, it can be difficult to find and purchase certain items for food storage. This may make getting food storage just that much more important for you to do. But how do you get those hard to find items, and are you prepared to pay more for them? You may consider getting other grains instead of rice and wheat. Before you purchase 100 pounds of barley, make sure that you know what to do with it. You should consider how you would use it. You may want to purchase a little extra so that you can practice working with it, and have your family grow accustomed to the taste. Work within the restrictions that you have at the cannery or your local food club. If you are limited to two bags of rice a month, only purchase two bags a month and slowly build up. Set the money aside so that you can purchase these items when they are available to you. Consider storing other food as well. Instead of focusing on whole grains, consider storing macaroni or flour instead. Although some of these foods may not store for as long, they will still benefit your family over the years. You should still work towards getting your other grains, but this may be easier to do in the meantime. Look around for deals. There may be a family moving who is willing to sell their food storage rather than moving it or an elderly couple who doesn't need the same amount of wheat as they did when they had kids at home. Wheat stores for at least thirty years, and it is the one food I would feel comfortable purchasing second hand. Of course you should make sure that it has been stored properly. You may also consider storing freeze dried foods as well as seeds for your family's needs. This can help to round out your diet so that it is much healthier. The seeds are great because you can use them over time. Be sure that you purchase plants that will produce seeds that will grow, so that you can save them and sue them again if you need to. My friend and I recently started a blog about food storage and emergency preparedness. It's a bit different from other websites because this is a step-by-step guide. Each week we do different things to help people get prepared. We're working on year-supply, 3-month supply, 72-hour kits, and emergency car kits.
