Focusing on the Nativity

Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of Christ. It is too easy to become caught up in the commercialism of Christmas. As a family it is important to bring the true focus of Christmas to our children. Here are four ideas for your family.

One way to do this is to display the nativity in your home. You can talk to your children as you set it up and tell them the story. This is a great way to help young children to learn the story of Christ's birth. It is also nice to have a nativity that the children are allowed to handle. You can find several different versions that are child friendly.

The next way to do this is during your family prayers and scripture study. As you read the scriptures together in December you can read through the stories found in the New Testament and of the prophecies of Christ found in the Old Testament. You can also talk about how Christ has blessed each of our lives by coming to Earth.

Another way to remember Christ is to have an Advent calendar that is focused on the birth of the Savior and the true meaning of Christmas. This calendar could include instructions for activities that will help your children remember the true meaning of Christmas. This could include reading scriptures, singing Christmas hymns or completing acts of service as a family.

Another great way to accomplish this is to act out the Nativity as a family or to attend a church event that focuses on the Nativity. You may wish to devote Christmas Eve to celebrating the birth of the Savior, and then spend Christmas day on the presents. As you gather together to read the scriptures, and sing the hymns the spirit will enter your home and you will remember the real reason we celebrate the holiday.
