FHE: Focus on Family Timeby Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger 12 May 2009 07:15 PM Family home evening is a time to gather your family together each week. It is about more than teaching your family the gospel. This is an essential and important part of family home evening, but one of the most powerful things that family home evening does is that it draws your family together and makes them stronger. As you spend time together as a family focusing on the gospel and getting to know each other, you build bonds that last. These bonds can carry your children through their most difficult times. If you are having a difficult time holding family home evenings, it is important to consider what you are letting get in the way of family home evening. Are you scheduling other activities on Monday night? Do you have to work? Then you can schedule family home evening for another night during the week. Consistency is the key and so if you can have family home evening on the same night every week you will be much more successful in having it. Are you having a difficult time in planning a successful family home evening? Are you too tired to put the lesson together on Monday? Try assigning different family members a week to teach each month. This will spread out the responsibility and give everyone a chance to prepare. You may want to provide a topic or a lesson manual to work from, but this is a great chance to have your children practice teaching the gospel to others. If the tone of your family home evenings is not as positive as you want it to be, try to do things a bit differently. Be sure that you are starting and closing with a prayer, but other than that try changing the order of things. Also be sure that you have realistic expectations of your children. Small children can't sit still for very long. Teenagers will want to ask more questions about the principles of the gospel. It is important to add Remember that the focus of family home evenings should be your family. It is important to meet regularly and to have a positive experience when you do meet. Family home evenings can help you to build lasting bonds with your family. Related Articles: Make Family Home Evenings Happen Is Your Family Time Disrupted by Summer? Our lesson time is very short - usually just a reminder of something he learned in nursery recently. We alway try and focus on having a fun activity and reinforcing the importance of being together and talking to each other. Community Tags FHE, family, lds Discuss this article
