Christmas Traditions

During the holidays it is so easy to focus on creating traditions in your family. As you look back at what you did to celebrate Christmas when you were growing up, you probably did similar things every year. While you do want to provide that for your children, you may choose to leave some of your traditions behind and create new ones for your family. It can also be difficult to create family traditions when you are not at home for Christmas, but visiting family. My favorite traditions are the ones that focus on the true meaning of Christmas. Primary Time: December 2007 Sharing Time Theme

The Sharing Time theme for December is “Jesus Christ once lived on earth and I have the faith that He will again.” The scripture for the month is Acts 1:11 “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” There is not a specific song associated with the month, although the sharing times do have the children sing Christmas songs and songs about Jesus’ life. Dinner Discussions Week 46

This week the dinner discussions are based on lesson forty-six. The Primary manuals have finished up the lessons for the year, although they do have a Christmas lesson planned, which will likely be taught on Christmas Eve. You may also want to extend the discussion to cover what you talked about in family home evening or scripture study as well. The twelve and thirteen year old Sunday school did … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Christmas in the Book of Mormon

One way to discuss the importance of Christ’s mission on the earth, and keep the focus on the season is to have a family home evening on the first Christmas in the Americas. This is an interesting lesson that should keep your children interested. It can also lead to a discussion of the importance of believing in and following Christ. You can open the lesson by telling about the prophecy of Samuel the Lamanite. You can read the prophecy he gave concerning knowing when Christ was born in Helaman 14:1-8. You can then read about how the wicked Nephites were … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: The Twelve Days of Christmas

With Christmas approaching you may want to plan your family home evenings so that your children focus on the true meaning of Christmas. One easy way to do this is to pick someone from your family to do the Twelve Days of Christmas for. Planning for this can take an entire evening. It is important that you take the time to plan the activities carefully. This can really bring the focus to giving instead of receiving. Growing up my family did this every year. It was a wonderful experience. We were able to reach out to other families in need … Continue reading
