Family Home Evening: The Restoration

This family home evening lesson is based on the General Gonference talks “The Things of Which I Know,” “The Restoration of the Gospel” and “Mom, Are We Christians?” These talks focus on the events surrounding the restoration of the gospel. You should review the account of the First Vision in Joseph Smith History as well. You can open the lesson by reading the account of the First Vision in Joseph Smith History 1:8-20. If you have younger children you may want to summarize the story. A great visual aid would be to use the Gospel Art Kit. After you summarize … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The First Vision – the Father and the Son Appear to Joseph Smith

I’m excited to study the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith this year and next. He is the first prophet of this dispensation, the one who restored the Gospel to the earth, and one who gave his life to seal his testimony. He was a great man, a true prophet, and a man of God. I look forward to studying him more in-depth. Our first lesson from the manual is entitled: “The First Vision – the Father and the Son Appear to Joseph Smith.” We begin with a recounting of the religious confusion that ensued after the death of Christ … Continue reading

When I First Met the Prophet – Douglas J. Vermeeren

I can think of no one, save the Savior Himself, who was more vilified in his life than was the Prophet Joseph Smith. Mobs set out to kill him, the law tried to find any excuse to imprison him, and his enemies were never far from him. He had been raised a poor farmer and suddenly was sharing stories of angels and gold plates. No one knew what to make of him, and many tried to make him out to be a fraud. But those who knew him and interacted with him knew differently. Author Douglas J. Vermeeren has taken … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 11:24-36

Nephi has inquired of the Lord to know the meaning of the vision his father saw. Deep in prayer, Nephi was taken to a high mountain by the Spirit of the Lord and now, with an angel for his guide, is being shown Christ who is to come. 24. And after he had said these words, he said unto me: Look! And I looked, and I beheld the Son of God going forth among the children of men; and I saw many fall down at his feet and worship him. 25. And it came to pass that I beheld that … Continue reading

Primary Time: May 2007 Theme

This month the theme for Primary is based on the Restoration. “My faith in Jesus Christ grows when I learn about the Restoration of the gospel. The scripture is Isaiah 29:14. You may want to encourage your older Primary children to memorize it. You can work on this as a family at family home evenings and dinnertime. The unit focuses on Joseph Smith receiving revelation from God to restore the true church on earth. Joseph Smith also translated the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is another witness for Christ. Dinner Discussions Week 46

This week the dinner discussions are based on lesson forty-six. The Primary manuals have finished up the lessons for the year, although they do have a Christmas lesson planned, which will likely be taught on Christmas Eve. You may want to check with your children’s teacher or ask your children to share something that they learned in Primary. My four-year-old forgets as soon as I pick her up. You may also want to extend the discussion to cover what you talked about in family home evening or scripture study as well. The twelve and thirteen year old Sunday school did … Continue reading
