Do You Record General Conference?

For a few years now, we have recorded general conference. Usually it is because during the Saturday session we might be busy with other things, and always think we will come back to it. Well, this year, we were out of town during general conference, and did not get to hear much except for President Monson’s announcement about missionaries shortly before we lost radio coverage in the car. So, I have been really grateful that we recorded it this year. And, to make it even better, we are actually watching those recordings! My husband had the idea that we would … Continue reading

Find Peace Through Temple Attendance

If you are struggling with a decision or you are just feeling like your life is out of balance, you may want to consider going to the temple. The temple is a place where you can go to seek comfort, personal revelation, and it allows you to serve others. Temple attendance can give you the strength to deal with the difficult times of you life. It is important to make temple trips a priority. You should go to the temple as often as possible. If you are about an hour away from the temple you may want to try for … Continue reading

Why Are the Little Things So Important?

Often I think about what one aspect of living the gospel stands out as the most important thing that I should focus on, and I never can quite pinpoint what one thing is the most important. Every aspect, and principle is equally important to maintaining and strengthening your testimony. Each individual aspect works to make you balanced and whole, and neglecting one aspect such as personal scripture study, personal prayer, paying your tithing or attending the temple can all have a negative influence on you. It is important to remember that the little things help to maintain an overall peace … Continue reading

How Did Your Family’s Goals Go?

How did your resolutions go for this year? The end of the first month is a great time to look at how far you have come, and areas that you may need to adjust. You may also want to adjust your goals slightly and change the stepping stones so that you can reach your goals. This is a great time to teach your children. Being open in your attempts, successes and failures teach your children the importance of continuing to work for your dreams. It can also demonstrate to them that we have the opportunity to start over and try … Continue reading

The Proclamation on the Family — David J. Ridges

My husband and I were married on August 31, 1995, in the Salt Lake temple. Both of us came from broken homes and we wanted to make our marriage a success, but we didn’t have personal examples to follow and we felt like we were flying a bit blind. Less than one month later, in September of 1995, the First Presidency issued “A Proclamation to the World on the Family,” and we felt as though we’d been given a personal map to correctly chart our course. “The Proclamation” as given to us by the First Presidency takes all the beliefs, … Continue reading

Choosing the Best Way for Your Family

The church has given us basic guidelines on how to have a happier family. We are counseled to have family home evening, family prayer and scripture study. We are instructed to teach our children the gospel and to strive to have the gospel in our homes. At times we can fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to other families or in deciding there is only one way to accomplish these goals. It is vital that we each realize that we have the right to do things our own way. We can come to learn and know the best way … Continue reading

Relief Society: Being Strong in Faith

In last October’s General Conference, Sister Julie B Beck gave a talk about being strong and immovable in three areas. The first area that she focused on was faith. Recently I attended a Relief Society lesson, which reviewed the principles in this talk, and it reminded me to go back and think about them. This talk really touched me as I listened to it, and I can see ways that I can still work to apply its teachings to my life. The first principle that Sister Beck speaks about is faith. She lists specific things that we can do as … Continue reading

Primary Time: July 2008 Sharing Time Theme

This month the sharing time theme is “Because I know we are all children of God, I will share the gospel with others.” The scripture is Doctrine and Covenants 18:15 and it reads, “And if it so be that ye should . . .bring but one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy.” The song for the month is “Called to Serve Him” (Hymns 249). The theme is divided into four basic principles. The first principle teaches that daily scripture study and personal prayer can help prepare you to be a missionary. The second principle stresses the importance … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Teaching Personal Application of Gospel Principles

Family home evening is a wonderful way to teach your children the gospel. During family home evening you can model gospel study habits for your children, so that they can begin to apply them to their lives. One important skill to teach your children is personal application of the principles found in scripture stories and lessons. This should happen in all of your lessons, but you may want to spend a week or two focusing on these things. First your children need to be able to recognize the principles behind the stories. When they are young you may simply tell … Continue reading

Young Women: Sending Your Daughter to College

It is nearly time to send your young woman off to college, if she graduated this year. Even if you have a few years until the big day, it is important to begin preparing your daughter for this exciting time in her life. The Personal Progress program offers an excellent opportunity for your daughter to be prepared to be on her own in all aspects of her life. Spiritually you want your daughter to be at a point where she studies the gospel on her own. It is also important that she has a desire to attend church and to … Continue reading
